I have an empty 30 gallon tank (exception with some snails, live rock, and some chaeto) and I am thinking about getting this $14.99 giant hermit crab. I mean it is massive. I am not sure what species, but they (local fish store) said it can't have anything else in the tank or it will catch and eat it. Any experience with giant hermit crabs?

A crab will eat anything . I dont know about it being able to catch the fish but I'm sure if the fish were to get close enough and the fish be slow enough it would eat it. Sounds cool though if that's all you want in the tank. I would think if it was fed enough it would not bother the fish. Not sure if its true for the species you are looking at. But I can guarantee it will kill the snails and other crabs.

That is kind of what I thought too. I think I am going to give it a go. I will probably relocate the snails etc to the other 2 tanks. I haven't seen anything quite like it. I will post pics of him when I get him home.

My buddy had one. You'll need more space than the 30 and it's a giant scavenger so anything is fair game. My little blue legs kill snails and each other pretty often with plenty of food. Now imagine that in that size.

Your tank would be perfect for a small mantis. If your looking for a cool crustacean. Just my 2c

What about coral? or an anemone?

2 years ago, LRS had a hermit crab, little bigger than a football. $200. Never seen one so big.
Thanks for sharing, comrade

I don't know about an anemone but it started in a reef. Didn't work out started killing things and wrecking stuff. It was the size of a softball shell and all. He had it in a 240. We put it in a 125 and it had problems moving around freely with the big shells available. Do what you want but it's not a good fit if you only have a 30 available for it.

If you're wanting a compromise. The regular ones out of the gulf get about the size of a baseball. Will still grab smaller fish but not so cumbersome.

Shells are hard to find for the giants

Thats huge. Nice

I'll try to find out more about the species when I go. I was told a 30 was okay for it. It looks might big to me though.

I actually moved a year ago to Knoxville tn for medical school. Have plans to make it back around there after I finish. I will keep you in mind. I appreciate it.

Hi from Tupelo, Is there an LFS in Oxford? Just curious because the only two here are aweful.

There was one way back in the day. It was the only one and was down by the square. It is now some kind of restaurant that serves fish for lunch and dinner smh.
