Hello, I am getting a gigantea anemone tomorrow and have a question. It is being shipped to me so I'm wondering if I should QT it with Cipro if it looks healthy or should I put it in the DT and see how it does? Im pretty sure I will QT it but just wondering your opinion. Another question, should I temperature acclimate the anemone then flush it with water upon arrival with tank water? I did this with my Haddoni anemone and it seemed to work. Thanks

@OrionN should be able to give you a full step by step on this. He is the master of gigs lol.

I personally qt all of my nems and did my gigantea as well. I did not cipro the nem, as it arrived in great condition, mouth nice and tight and in a ton of water. Temp acclimated, moved to bucket with that water, heavy drip from qt tank to bucket, small heater in an egg crate case to keep water temp stable, about an hour later it went into the qt tank. Observed nem for 2 weeks in qt while doing 50% wc every day for about 5 days. Nem made some nasty water for the first few days while it purged itself. From there, I placed a sponge from my sump in the hob filter and didn’t have an issue for the next week. Nem then went to dt after the same drip method to move into qt from shipping bag. That was a year ago and nem is doing great with all my other nems.

Note: most nems I have had to cipro treat, as they looked horrible. But it does not always work and is also not always needed imo.

Hey thank you for the response, I will probably QT it then and depending on how it looks use Cipro I have the QT tank and am going to set it up probably tonight. I was reading a lot on gigs and never found a straight answer on acclimation so that really helps. I read OrionNs experiences with gigs and it has also been very helpful information.

Glad I could provide insight. Post some pics when you get it and during qt. Always good to have more info on nem acclimation and experiences doing it.

Will do. Fingers crossed it comes in good condition tomorrow

I would QT him also if you already have an anemone, especially a healthy Gigantea, in your DT. Make sure the anemone attach to glass or something that is movable. I like to not remove the anemone from an attachment if at all possible. I can also use a sharp razor to remove anemone from flat glass panel with minimal stress to them. Treat or not depends on how the anemone look as you get him acclimated to new tank.
Good luck. Pictures would be most welcome.

Hi, thanks for the response OrionN I am getting him tomorrow and will be putting him in a 10 gallon QT tank. So if he doesn't look great during acclimation then I will treat with Cipro. If he looks healthy I will put in QT and watch for anything. I will take pictures when it arrives. Thanks!

Just got the anemone this morning, a bit bleached out. Can't see the mouth yet but will send update pictures. Sorry about the blurry pictures

Ok he finished acclimation a while ago here's a pic. His foot stuck to the bag so Im just leaving him there for now, his mouth is closed and isn't gaping. Tentacles very sticky

That is awesome. Sticky foot, sticky tentacles and no gapping of the mouth are great signs.

Thank you. I just checked on it again and its mouth is still looking good and it is still stuck to the bag. Should I only start treatment if I see something wrong?

My opinion is treatment only if there is an issue. Be sure to do water changes as well to manage ammonia. Clean water and sufficient light will go a long way. Also, an ammonia alert badge is a great thing. Just be sure to watch for it to expel any waste. It may or may not, and mine typically do it about an hour after lights out when they decide nature calls.

As for the bag, you should be able to get the nem off of it with no issues or position it so the nem moves off of it.

Hi, ok I won't treat it unless there's a problem. I am going to be doing 50-95% water changes a day and will try to get my hands on an alert badge. I positioned the bag next to a mug to see if it wanted to move onto that but so far no interest its mouth remains closed and it is looking good. I will post an update picture tomorrow to see how its doing

Sorry for the very long wait, the anemone finished 7 days of Cipro and 3 days of observation, I got him off the bag but did rip a couple of tentacles some I'm going to leave him in quarantine for a day or two. Heres a picture before getting off the bag

Looks good. I would start doing regular water changes from your display tank water into your QT. Get it acclimated to your main displays parameters. Assuming the levels are good of course. And I would also try feeding it a little bit after its done its course of medication. Feed small bits no larger than mouth.
