Gilroy 425g Build Thread (All Apex, all the time)

I have been trying out a number of things both to see what would work best in my tank as well as just to really try out all that the WAV can do in the different modes. I have not yet settled on something permanent and probably will not do so until I get corals into the tank.

OK, so some new goodies arrived this week. Some today. Too bad I will not be able to get on this for a week or two because of business travel and a three-day father-son snowboarding trip.

When I decided on a UV I said I might as wall go for it and not hold back. I had no idea how huge this thing is. Take a look at the refractometer I put in the picture for a scale reference!

The aluminum tubing and connector pieces is for the lightweight canopy frame I am designing that will be skinned only on the outside faces with wood. The whole thing will go together like tinker-toys and will be super strong, especially when I put 1/4" plywood on the top side for sheer strength. Lights are not far off!

The last picture is my new Hanna checker. Slightly improved model they just released and the readout is now in dKh so it is a bit easier to read than the ppm versions - one lest step to convert.

Shout out to SaltwaterAquarium.com for the UV and the Hanna!

Well done man !! Took me some serious time (and a beer or two :)) but I read through every page... your tank build is gorgeous. Cant wait to see how this system evolves, keep updating us for sure !

What wattage is that UV?

It is an 80W High Output from Emperor Aquatics

Thanks for taking the time to read through. It is fulfilling to know that people find it interesting and (I hope) helpful.

All you need is a fish bit.

That is the funniest thing I have read all day!

Where did you get the light mounting system

Actually it is not made to be a mounting system specifically for lights. I needed a super strong, lightweight framework for the lights. It is hard to describe how it will work, but here is the rough stick drawing of one of the two halves. Got it from outwater.com

Here is a basic figure I made to count the fittings needed. There will be one of these frameworks fro each side of the tank. It is 48"x24" box with an extra 15" hanging over with the top bar. The wood "skin" will extend nearly to the wall on this top rail and slide down next to the glass of the aquarium when you lift it. Also, I will have lead counterweights on that back bar. Again, hard to easily explain.

@Terence interesting, YES, helpful not so much..... You see your actually making me want to spend MORE money on tank upgrades and gear since your tank build is so epic, which will get me in trouble with the "boss" :D. Seriously though I just ordered a Dos and Ddr, just need to figure out how sneak them into the house now and under the tank.........;)

Terence, I'm running a reactor on a Reefer 350 and also have the DOS. What are is your current setup/schedule/Dose and coding? if you don't mind sharing :)

Understand that this is an experiment. I am not yet advocating using the DŌS for this purpose. This configuration results in effectively 40ml/min of effluent put into the tank. Because of duty cycle and the pump speed, it really can never exceed 83ml/min. Because of this, and due to it being a large tank, there may come a time when my tank demand will exceed the capability.

So far though this method has worked awesome.

One additional caveat is running any peristaltic pump at this speed is considerably noisier than running one at 10ml/min. For me it is no big deal as it is in a separate room under the house.

Totally understand Terrence. I was also wondering if the following.
20 drips = 1ml (at a close guesstimate)

So if I wanted to dose 40 drips per minute this would be 2 ml per minute at a guess.

Which in the dose settings I could do the following:

Co2DOSE
Dose Rate = 7ml
Direction = Forward
Per Dose Ammount = 2
Dose Intervals = 60 sec
Dose Count = 1

Now in the Dose

Fallback OFF
Set OFF
OSC 001:00/001:00/000:00 Then Co2Dose
If pHCo2 < 6.43 Then OFF
If pH < 7.80 Then OFF

Would this burn kill the DOS?

2ml/min is probably too little of an effluent rate for the calcium reactor. But I don't know your set up. I would have to check with engineering to see if programmed that way whether or not the firmware would still insert rest periods. Or you could just test it. That said, the DOS should not be ever run continuous duty.

Not wishing to still the thread Terrence, I''ll put this on the Apex forum. Looking forward to seeing the outcome of your setup.

Interesting to see the PROFESSIONAL guys still have a passion for there own reef tank. Good luck with all that you are trying to accomplish with your setup. I can't wait to see which lights you choose for your setup.

I think many would be surprised how many in the industry don't even keep aquariums. Most had the passion at one time or another, but for many it is just a job. Sad really.

I can't even imagine not doing this. Not only do I love the hobby, but I need to be "Eating my own dog food" as the phrase goes. It makes me the best advocate for engineering and also to validate or invalidate some of the crazy ideas we hear from the field!
