Gilroy 425g Build Thread (All Apex, all the time)

Last week I went to Neptune Aquatics with my wife Nancy and got some stuff to seed my sump - rock, sponges, macro, etc. It was a good trip. As we were leaving she says "What, no fish, no corals?" Of course I made mental note of the fish and the single coral that stood out for here - Mother's Day was coming up after all!

So yesterday I go up to Neptune Aquatics to do my Mother's Day shopping - How lucky of a guy am I that this means a trip to a LFS!

I picked up the coral and the fish she had her eye on, zoomed home, dipped, inspected, and got them in the tank. Yes, I know, no real lights yet but this coral would be fine with my temp lights. The fish was QT by Robert and personally looked after for weeks so I felt good about just a simple quick FW dip for possible flukes as instructed by Robert.

So, what did I get her? Take a look!

Not
Necessary every day. I use the DOS to top off and "true up" every four or five
Days.

Guys, please help Terence out with the code to make the APEX notify him when the salinity goes way out of whack. We don't want this thread to end and it's obvious we can't trust Terence when it comes to noob moves! :p

I had THAT part set up but didn't have my phone on me at dinner. What I still don't have is a salinity statement in the audible alarm. I might do that. For now that one is reserved for the leak detection only.

Ultimately it is good to know I can dump my entire freshwater tank into the sump and my salinity only drops 5.5ppt. Not great but not going to immediately nuke everything either.

Very true! Very cool that you shared this because it just makes us think how we can plan around these disasters.

A big part of why I am doing this build thread is to show people that some in the industry actually still have huge passion, but moreover to show people that mistakes do happen, even to the "experts", and that even the control-guy doesn't have everything so figured out!

Totally agree!

It's how we all learn

The Abyzz is certainly a nice pump, and the A100 would work in my 100 gallon tank that's in the planning stages, but I can't justify the $1300 cost of the pump even though I can afford it. A more realistic alternative would be the Vectra M1 or the COR. Since the COR is not available then it will be the Vectra M1 until the COR becomes available for sale. It's ok that the M1 isn't Apex ready. That's up to Echotech to make that happen. The pumps just have to fit in the 4 inch wide compartment of a Synergy Reef CL-22 sump. I think they do as most DC pumps are very compact.

I really enjoy following your thread. Your tank is coming along very well.

I can totally understand your decision. It seems sound. Good luck on your build and thanks for following.

Mostly things that will do fine in the lower light for now: blastos, favia, cephastrea, scroll, chalice, etc.

And then two acros that I stick on the very top of the rock 10" from the surface 16" from the two BML strips I have in the temporarily.

Where and when does he do his live sales I would love to get in on that.

The LIVE sale was here this past weekend. He usually does his Live Sales here but he also has sales frequently on his website. :) Check out his forum here on R2R!

Will do. Thanks for the info, I love live sales.

Will you be upgrading your apex on this build? I'd be interested to see you attach the problematic calcium reactor to the new power bar and monitor the motor for another failure.

Yes. In fact it had already been running on it but of course I could not share pics ;)

I was running it in parallel upstairs so it was not connected to the calcium reactor.

My reactor pump has again failed BTW. So I am at interzoo and stationed 100 feet from aqua bee booth. I spoke to THE guy there (through a translator) and he first told me there is no problem. Then he told me IF there is a problem out there that it is not the pump. That it is a problem with the application. I told him that Deltec has been using his product in a calcium reactor for years with mixed results and he said "well this pump should it be used in a calcium reactor because of the fine particles in the water will make it fail". He told me it is Deltecs fault for using it in a way that is not supported. Nice, huh?

So, I will be hopefully getting the metric fittings to covert it over to a Sicce pump and we will see how that goes.
