Gimmito's 450 Gal L-Shaped Display

A reef club member offered to give me some starter corals once the FT is cycled. If they do well, I can start putting in the more desirable corals in. I'm just waiting for my black acrylic frag racks to be made and then I can start to drill holes for the frag plugs. It gives me some time to order a hanging kit also.

Here's a pic of some black acrylic frag racks Gen made for me.

I made a Tap Plastics run and picked up some acrylic cleaner and cloth. I was looking at the Novus to buff out some scratches on the frag tank, but it was pretty expensive.

I also picked up a 7/16' acrylic drill bit to drill holes for the frag plugs.

I got a chance to polish the lids and frag rack at Gen's. Who would have thought using a blow torch could be so fun ?

I had Gen tier the frag racks for light loving corals. I also drilled out 816 holes for the frag plugs...boy am I tired.

I hung the Maristar fixture & hooked up the lumatek ballasts. I need to change out the bulbs soon...I like the ushio 14k's and will probably go with aqua blue special and fiji purple for the T5's.

I hooked up the jbj heater w/controller (nice big led reading), dialed in the H&S A150 (it started making some nice foam within a few hours), & threw some live rock in the drain section to jump start the cycling.

Everything is assembled and placed sop neatly!!!!

I love seeing a system with good clean lines in the build process.

Steve

Thanks Steve,

I still need to clean up the cords w/zip ties and get a piece of panduit for the power cords.

Next up is finishing the plumbing and making a light rack
on the Big tank.

when do you plan on stocking and have you thought about a stocking list? awesome build can't wait to get my 500 up and going. not looking foward to the money spending but i think its well worth it :)

Thanks Barryfish. I plan on doing the 90 day rule which was suggested by Tony Vargas. I've even heard Anthony Calfo and Steven Pro suggesting going fishless for 6 months...we'll see how long I can last. lol. As for stocking list, I know I'll have a school of yellow tangs (my wife's favorite fish), dither fish such as anthias (possibly borbonus and ventralis), a pair of mandarins, etc. I also would like to try 6-7 smore or photon clownfishes w/ some interesting anenomes (flametip, candycorn, etc.). As for corals, it will a prodominantly sps tank with some lps for that sway feel.

I hear you regarding the money spent on large systems, but if you are on the lookout on the "for sale threads" you can find some really good deals. LMK your link to your build thread when you get a chance.

will do. i am currently in the army and stationed in colorado springs but when i go back to tx in about 9 months i plan on building my own tank out of 1" acrylic deminsions are 96x44x24. ruffly 500gals peninsula i run a retail fish store back in tx with a friend so my fish list is not as expensive getting all the fish wholesale. some were saying that 500 is way to big and way to expensive but as everyone knows this hobby is addicting and a part of life. i hope to see your tank in a couple of months with lots of progress and will be keeping up with this.
