Salifert & Elos are one of the more popular test kits out there. The Hach HD/890 colorimeter has the ability perform 90 different test (minus calcium and magnesium), but I've been reading some of Boomers reviews. He mentioned that it does all those test for freshwater flawlessly, but with the increase ions in saltwater it needs a reference to properly calibrate it (and I'm no scientist). That being said, I'm also looking at the Hanna colorimeter.

But what's up with those nitrates?
So high so fast. Something in the rocks?
Or test issue? I notice it jumped 100 -> 250 -> 100.
You might want to take a peek at phosphate levels, in case
something is leaching out.
Be careful of a big hair algae bloom. With those coralline-free dry rocks and
high nitrate levels, you might let hair algae get fully established.

Hey Mark,
The Red Sea test kits are pretty hard to read with the color & ppm increments. The Salifert nitrate test are giving me a lower reading than the RS. You have to remember that the RS nitrate test kits gives a increment reading from 100 to 250...big jump there ! That's why I'm looking to invest in the Hanna checkers or some of the more advanced colorimeters out there. Thanks for the heads up on the hair algae bloom, but I don't think the rocks should have much left bound up after being cooked for 6+ months.

Hey! Sorry i didnt reply so soon i just got back from the philippines yesterday, I live on the east bay near hayward and fremont . No not in BAR are you ? I wanna join though.

Joining BAR was the best 20 bucks I spent in the hobby and our meetings are in your backyard (at Chabot College).
The tank will be mainly sps w/a few lps in there.

I got my QT back from Gen. He patched the old bulkhead holes and drilled new ones higher up. I was getting too much bubbles and a slurping sound w/the old ones being too low. I installed some new bulkheads and added tru unions for easy disassembly.
Now comes water test time. A little trick a buddy showed me (way back when) is to add a little silicone on the threads.
