I was close to giving up on mine (softies and lps) at the beginning of this summer. No amount of water changes, limited fish feedings, added supplements, changing light schedules, added filtration, or manual removal would keep the hair algae at bay or encourage growth of my corals. Couldn't keep the nitrates lower than 30 or so. PH rarely topped 7.8.
Then I stopped cleaning weekly, reduced water changes to once a month, stopped adding every miracle cure on the market, haven't fed the corals in months, and tossed in a sea urchin. I top off with distilled water every now and then and scrape the algae off the glass maybe every other week. Haven't done a single water test since then.
My corals have never looked better. Finally getting good polyp extension from the lps, and the softies are growing and multiplying. The gorgonian I thought I was going to lose has bounced back, and my rock flower nems are holding strong. Hair algae is present but no longer the primary feature. Bubble algae has taken off, but I really don't mind it, opting to pluck out the occasional patch that starts growing too large or on the base of the lps.
Wish I had tried the hands-off method years ago. I'm sure it would lead to disaster with sps, and the tank isn't pristine, but I'm pretty happy with it now.
