GK - 29 Gallon Build Thread

Still looks great even with all the wires, following along!!

Thanks. The amount of extra wires bunched up and behind that control board is crazy. Glad I can't see all of those all the time.

Lol its the nature of the beast it seems, I'm in the middle of planning out my control centre for my set up and it's hard to think about all the cords and crap bunched up everywhere I'll probably lose my mind and start cutting cords to shorten them to only exactly what I need lol

Put some shocks in the hood.

Got my water, got all the plumbing done, and picked up live sand. Got my 1/2 flow meter from apex in the mail and went to put it in. Just happened to read the back of the tube of liquid plumbers tape I was using "for metal pipes only DO NOT USE ON PLASTIC". I am now taking apart all of the pipe thread joints, cleaning them, and redoing with the right compound. Guess it's better than finding out by a leak detector going off.

And since these things are boring without pics, here, I added some nice lights to my control section.

looks way cooler in person.

Went to the LFS to get RO water so I could scrub the wrong pipe compound off my threads. Noticed these cool titanium heaters. Got me thinking: all of this struggling I have been doing trying to get two glass heaters in my sump in a position they won't fall and break, and these gems are out here. So I got a new titanium heater with attached temp prob (not integrated) and controller. Upgrading equipment and I don't even have water. O well, anyone want to buy a Eheim Jager TruTemp 75 Watt Fully Submersible UL Approved Heater haha.

Loaded everything up with water tonight. No leaks which was good. I am having some noise issues with the overflow. I'll be experimenting to see how can eliminate it. I'll post some pictures tomorrow once I add the rock.

If you really want to sell it, pm me with a price. I'm actually looking for that exact heater lol

Sand settled a lot over night. Dissed ammonia today to start the cycle.

How do your ATOs run? Mine is running like crazy and I find it hard to believe there is that much evap so quickly. And given that I have 4 leak detectors, I know it's not leaking. Thoughts?

Well how much evap are we talking here?
And do you mean, your ATO is constantly running/turning on and off frequently?
Or are you just noticing you're ATO reservoir is emptying quicker?

I suppose I mean the ATO turns on, fills it up, and turns back in pretty soon later to fill it up. It's no operating wrong, just having to top off more often than expected. 3.5 gallons in like 4 days. Maybe my gauge for a lot is off. I can literally sit there and watch the water level in pump section drop...and that's not because of excessive free time.

Yeah that sounds about right, I go thru probably 2.5 gallons in my 17 gallon in 3 days. As long as it's operating correctly, as in, your float or switch isn't stuck or malfunctioning and your supply hose from the ATO reservoir isn't siphoning water back out and water isn't leaking out of your tank, lol, it sounds like everything is going smooth. Evaporation is also very important bc it helps with gas exchange.

amonia is dropping and going into the alert phase. Once it completely goes away I'll dose with ammonia again and start cycle #2.

i also have the first growth in the tank. It's in the return lines and looks like the start of the diatoms.

Also added another 2.5 lb rock just to get more live rock in the tank. Put it the back so it doesn't really affect the looks all the much.

Was having trouble with the apex salinity probe. Recalibrated last night and now it seems to be working correctly.

Looks good, did you buy that rock from reefers direct?

Ammonia alert has dropped to all green "alert". I'd guess two days and it will drop to less than .02 ppm "safe". I'll definitely do one more cycle. If my patience can last, I'll do a third before adding anything.

I did not. I got it from my local LFS and used reef cement, acrylic rods, concrete drill, and a hammer to get it into the shape I wanted.

Looks great man! I plan on using that technique to scape my 80 gallon, where'd you get the acrylic rods?
