i bought an innovative marine 100 EXT about a month ago and it sat on my living room floor for most of that time. i thought i gave it a solid check after getting it out of the shipping crate and what not, but maybe not? anyway, a couple weeks ago i found out i'm lucky enough to have termites that require a full fumigation. so a week ago my brother in law and i moved the tank to my garage which is not connected to the house and put it on the stand. this seemed great as i could plumb it out there and not worry about getting the primer stuff on my carpet..

then as it was on the stand i was checking it out and..

so i filled it about 1/3 of the way full with rodi just now and it's not leaking.. gonna leave it for a few days to see how it does, but that's obviously not the same as filling it with sand, rock, wavemakers, etc.

it's smooth to the touch inside and outside of the tank, but ugh. anyone know much about glass? the glass is
  • Ultra-Thick 15mm High Clarity Low Iron Glass
  • Diamond Edged Flat Polished
idk if that makes a difference for likelihood of holding up

safe to use? proceed with caution? good luck dude that's gonna break soon? extra silicone the inside and outside? light it on fire? hopefully you've always wanted a 100 gallon hamster tank?

I work with glass and I'll tell ya right now even silicone added to the spots of the crack will only lead to more stress fractures once you try and fill it. The water isn't just pushing down with gravity it's also pushing against the sides of the glass.

Sorry about your tank loss...

So.. was this a factory issue or no way of knowing that?
Innovative marine has a 1 year warranty but I don’t see how they won’t just say it was something on my end. And to be totally fair it may have been who knows. We didn’t drop the tank or anything but no way they could know that

Once you signed for delivery of the tank, any damage is on you, unless a seam burst or split while in use. They don’t cover an empty tank that mysteriously got cracked after moving it by family members and since you posted on here they have proof.

No good. To properly test, fill the tank but I fare the worse. It may shatter all together.
Always best to inspect a tank upon arrival as now with the time passed, Im sure you will get an argument from manufacture as to negligence.

Unfortunately it could be many things all the way from an imperfection in the glass unseeable from the naked eye or even temperature changes slowly over time. As it flexes it cracks. Most glass has a shelf life only problem is you never know if it's 1 day or 1000 years.

From the sounds of it the problem could've been a temperature change in the garage that caused a flex and crack. That's what it looks like to me at least m especially with you saying it's flush and not cracked through

Thankfully for everyone reading this that's worried about your glass fear not for once the water is in especially with the heater that glass is staying nice and consistent (HOPEFULLY)

hmm, so just putting it in the garage possibly did it? that's awesome lol. it has been extra cold here lately and the garage is not heated or cooled

i'd have to get the suction cups out and lift the tank to see if it's really just below the surface, it might be underneath. idk. sucks. sadface.

Thanks for the shout out dude. I did my best to avoid viewing the other suggestions to give my unbiased opinion.
Curious where the pressure and force came from to pop a clam in that glass to start. (Hoping it happened before you filled it with water or you may have somthing under there) Glass Is tougher then people give it credit for, so don’t rush to dump this tank. Glass chips easy yeah because the edges are the weak point but, that doesn’t necessarily weaken the performance. In fact there are many glass tanks that I use today that are missing a small piece. Some I built, some I chipped my self.
To be sure your chip did not interfere with integrity, you’ll want to fill it up with water but also pay attention to the silicone seam near it. Your silicone is black so it will be easy to check up on. What your looking for is silicone separation, with black silicone the seams will slowly fade from black to grey when the seam has failed.example-

Look for tiny bubbles or vertical fades lines.air pockets near the seams. The fracture is on the outside so chances are you’ll be fine. Good luck reefer, get that thing wet already!

When in doubt I run a fat bead of silicone on top of a cured bead of silicone. Wait 1-2 weeks for it to dry and test in the garage for a day or two. You can re seal a tank without cutting away old caulking if the old caulking is still in good shape.

You're saying that the glass is smooth inside and out, so when you run your finger along it you don't feel the chip? If you bumped it there would be damage on the edge of the tank indicating an impact point. Your pictures are not clear enough to tell. In any case I would contact IM and explain the situation with clearer pictures and see what they say. Sometimes companies will help you as a goodwill gesture because a satisfied customer will tell many especially with forums like this. Let us know because I own many IM products and I am curious how they will react.

yeah i noticed the issue before it ever saw water. i filled the tank about a 1/3 of the way full, then started thinking it over and figured it just wasn't worth even trying. you think it's worth giving it a whirl? to me the silicone looks fine, but it's pretty close to the front right corner..

i took a few more pics and i don't see any tiny bubbles or vertical fade lines or air pockets? but i am a little biased here..

It's worth a try contacting IM and seeing if they are willing to offer any assistance.

yeah i sent them an email. i acknowledged it wasn't really a warranty situation and was just hoping if i took the tank to them they could fix it and for how much
