I'm going to do a 40breeder with a 20 long sump. This will be my first reef tank and thus my first DIY tank build.

I was going to go with the Eshopps because it has an emergency drain and has great reviews. However, I see many having issues with the waterline. I was advised on another thread to place the template on the inside but I see others who did that and still have waterline issues.

So I was thinking of Glass-Holes since most seem to use them. But there isn't an emergency drain which worries me.

Is there a sure way of making sure the Eshopps doesn't show a waterline and am I just overworrying about the lack of an emergency drain on the 40B?

I really liked the way the eshopps is setup with the outside overflow box.
It is true they have a waterline issue.
I didn't know about it ( failure to research on my part) until mine was drilled.
Since you already know about it, it would be easy to correct.

I use the Eshopps. To fix the waterline I measured on the inside and siliconed a piece of acrylic about halfway up on the inside of the overflow. My waterline now is just above the black reinforcement

I used an eshopps L on my 75 and like it very much. I was aware or the water line issue but still ended up about a 1/4' low [emoji848] but definitely can be worse if not careful.

I like my eshopps L on my 45 cube. The waterline is a tad low, that can be fixed with a thin piece of plastic/acrylic.

Is there a picture you can share? I'm assuming you mean you shortened the teeth?

I have the glass-holes 1500 GPH... Ive had it close to 2 years and have not had one problem with it. Super easy to install and came with everything for $100... Id definitely buy from them again...

It’s kind of hard to see here and I couldn’t find any pictures from when I did it. I did pretty much just shorten the teeth. I had some black acrylic from building my sump and cut a piece about 3/4 in and long enough to go from one end of the teeth to the other. I also measured my hole so that the overflow was about 1/4 in below the lip on the brace. I’m happy with the way it turned out. This is my first tank and it has definitely been a learning experience. Cutting the holes in the glass was way easier than most videos make it out to be.

I'd go with drilled and an internal overflow like a ghost box. You would be able to set your water height and you can make a durso or bean animal style overflow set-up. I have a predrilled 210 with dual overflow boxes and am running two main drains and two emergency drains. Not the best pics, I was still building and mixing salt.

Eshopps s on my 40b.

Even with heavy surface agitation you do not see the water line. Which is just above the bottom of the frame.

Btw did this by using a dry erase marker.
Set the inside box as high as it would go, then marker where the hole was with the marker.

Then on the outside lined up marked circle with the template. Locked in place with clamps.
Inside box fits snuggly right under the frame.
