I have a glass pane that covers the top of my tank by about 85%. I get tired of cleaning it and was just curious if many people run without anything between their lights and water.

Here's a picture without my glass top, could I leave my tank like this with no ill effects?

I dont run anything between my bulbs and the water. If its glass, it is more likely hurting your PAR levels.

What kind of lights do you have? It looks like the lights are pretty close to the surface of the water. The humidity will sharply shorten their lifespan. Also, do you have any fish in your tank that are jumpers? If so, you need some kind of top on the tank or you will lose fish.

I have the glass tops on my tank and I really like them. It is a pain to clean them, but it is just part of my water change routine. I keep them partially open during the day and close them in the evening. (Night time is when most fish jump)

I have a watchman goby, mandarin goby, and 2 clownfish.

The lights are t5ho that have their own glass piece in front of them.

Yip that watchman goby is a jumper, if you don't want to do glass cover it with either eggcrate or wire mesh about a square centimeter in guage.

He's been in the tank for 2 years now, but ill put the glass lid back on. I was just in the middle of cleaning it.

Your lights should be fine in that case. BRS sells DIY Mesh tops to keep your Goby from carpet surfing.

unless you have a full hood, swap your glass for a mesh cover. I have LED on my tank and just have a splash guard on them. then again, I have a full hood and where it is open in the back, I have a 3" brace on the tank.

Get the mesh from brs and the metal window frame from lowes to make it fit your tank. Egg crate is too thick and create slight shadowing. Screens are pretty easy to build and don't cost to much

Yea I thought about a mesh screen but I think ill just stick with the glass lid for now since I already have it. Ill eventually do a mesh screen though.
