I’m just getting in to the saltwater hobby, and I am looking to build a tank with the same dimensions as a 20 gallon long Aqueon (~30” x 12” x 12”), but without the dreaded black rim. I know some people will just say to de-rim the tank, but I would rather not take my chances, even with a tank as small as a 20 gallon.

Anyway, I was wondering what the recommended glass thickness would be for such a tank, would it be easier to buy a 40b and cut it down and use the extra glass for euro bracing?

Sincerely,
Alex

Hello Alex and welcome to Reef2Reef!

IMHO building is way easier than trying to cut down a bigger tank.

For a tank that size 1/4" glass will work. But for a small amount of extra cost, 3/8" glass will look a lot more classy. My 40g cube is 2'x2'x20" and made with 3/8" glass and I'm thinking about going a bit bigger. Either a 30" or 36"x30"x18" which I can fit onto the same stand I have now. I've had lots of big tanks and I'm not going to go bigger. I'm just looking to build a better tank with a better overflow and a bit more room for sand and RFA's.

If you have questions about building a tank, feel free to ask. I've built 6 and they are all still in use, but at other peoples homes! I just have my 40g cube and 40g sump/refugium. This was during the build stage.

I wouldn't say it would be easier to cut down a 40B, but no doubt it's cheaper then buying glass. This actually sounds like a clever idea to get some glass lol.

Anyhow if you are buying it and can budget the 3/8" that would be really classy, I agree. If not 1/4" ~6mm seems to be pretty common.
