What do you guys think would be an appropriate glass thickness for a drop off 36"x18" tank with the deep end 22" and shallow end 12"? My buddy can get me 1/4” for free but has to order 3/8”. Would 1/4” be fine by itself or braced, or is that risky?

I know there are some guides to glass thickness out there, but it is a little hard to calculate the different height dimensions those charts.

I'd add bracing to any type of build tbh but in your case at the 22 inch segment I'd definitely add a brace.

How would you brace it? Like just a 1” trim around the top? Do you do them flush with the top or actually on the top?

You can actually do both flush and have another piece on top of it all .. just for a price of mind but either or works tbh

bump - I would like at least a couple more opinions - I got the price difference between the 1/4" versus the 3/8" and it is quite substantially seeing that I could do the 1/4" for free!

My current tank is 14" "tall" and I still see more bowing of the front pane with 1/4" than I'd like to see ideally. It's a rimless tank though, so adding a rim would probably help a lot. That tank is also 6" shorter than your planned project. I'd go with 3/8" for peace of mind!

ADA uses 10 mm glass for their 36 x 18 x 24 tanks, which is similar in size to your build.

Given that, the 3/8" option seems like a better bet to me, especially if you want it rimless.
