Ordered many tanks for myself and customers over the years from GC as long as they are glass not acrylic they are great tanks.

Glasscages has a reputation for crappy silicone work and tanks that leak.
I bought a 240 that was 1/2 the price of everyone one else.
I was pretty happy until it came.
It was incredibly dirty with sharpie marks all over it, and debris in the tank.
The silicone work was horrible. I spent hours cleaning this tank up.
Then 8 years into it, it started leaking from a bottom seam.
I wish I had paid attention to all the bad reviews. They were right.

Wow! That’s horrible. That hasn’t even remotely been my experience. Maybe they made some changes to their standards.

I will just say caveat emptor. I also should have paid attention as well and I purchased my new tank recently for an upgrade to a bigger reef tank. :mad:

My recently sold 360g was a glass cages ensemble. Sprung a leak which was easy to seal but due to garbage silicone work. Otherwise solid tank !!

My tank is a glass cages. It seems really sturdy, the glass is thicker than most other companies use for the same size tank which has made it pretty inconvenient to move, but It still holds water 5 years after i bought it.
The only thing i struggled with was communication, they told me a specific timeline when i purchased and did a pretty poor job keeping me updated as it went weeks past the promised delivery date. I also had to drive to the next state over to pick up the tank since the driver fell ill with altitude sickness. Admittedly it was out of their control, but kinda just topped off the customer service experience for me.

I’ve seen many Glasscages tanks being a part of a reef club. Everyone was happy with their tanks. The one complaint was that the silicone was a little sloppy, but easy enough to trim. When weighing the price they offer a good product.

The biggest complaint I see is sloppy silicone. Most seem happy with their tank, but they for sure have a higher than average "disgruntled" customer base. I had contacted them years ago on a custom tank and received snippy replies on it.

I'm sorry, but silicone is literally the backbone of any tank. Sloppy silicone work means to me sloppy skills. Anyone can put a couple pieces of glass together and slather on some silicone.

If you order one, I am sure you would be fine. They are lower priced, and I have been tempted to order from them .

This can honestly be said about every brand out there.

Every single tank in the world no matter who built it has a chance to leak.

I have NEVER had a tank that I have owned or installed from GC leak.

That being said, I have seen one leak (was not mine or one in installed) and I went to repair it and traced it back to the stand.

I am no fan boy of any product really. But, I get sick to death of people bashing a product when, if you look at the % of tanks that go bad, it's probably better than most if not just as good.

Look at the percentage of a certain controller that modules and the controller itself goes bad and kills a lot of stuff. No one says it's shoddy work. They just buy more and keep plugging away. I don't use controllers because I have owned 3 and all three crashed a tank and killed everything. That's 100% failure. But I would get absolutely slammed by fanboys if I publicly said what brand two of them were.


Now, let's all get back to reefing. This subject has been beaten to death.

Glasscages has a 3 decade+ history of making crappy tanks.
All you have to do is a little research.
As far as getting back to reefing?
It's all about reefing here and the equipment that's used.
It's also about reviews of that equipment.
I made a review of a product I bought.
Despite the bad reviews I saw, there were a couple sprinkled in that were good. Because of the cost I focused on the good like many do these days.
It was a mistake on my part.

Sorry if you don't agree with it, but that's just the way it is.
Someone asks about them, I will tell my story.

I am not going to argue other than to say they have a over a two decade history with me of making good tanks. So much so, I have just ordered two 240s from them.

It's all in experience I guess.

FWIW a 96 x 30 x 25" Planet Aquarium and Glass Cages aquarium are the same price.

I’ve heard a lot of complaints on Internet forums regarding Glasscages tanks, however for the many tanks in my reef club that I’ve seen over the years, nobody ever had a leak that I know about. Everyone was happy with their tanks once they trimmed the silicone. Price and a custom build were the reason for utilizing them.
You can hear every point of view online, however when I see the products in action there is no better testimonial for me.
Each situation is unique and what works for one hobbyist may not be the best fit for another.
Glasscages offers a service that many will be satisfied with.

I used them over a decade ago to make two custom tanks. A 290 gallon bowfront and a 190 gallon "pie slice." Both tanks were well constructed and lasted the entire time I had that home (six years - not sure what happened after the home was sold, as they were built-in). I would agree that their silicone job was sloppy, as stated by some of the previous posters.

More recently, I purchased another custom tank from a different vendor - Custom Aquariums (www.customsaquariums.com). The tank has been filled for six months. Also an excellent construction of the tank. You might consider them as well.

Thank you everyone for your advice and information. After much consideration to everything (including financial) I have decided to use the 90 gallon tank I already have. 48 x 17 x 24. I also just really love this stand and canopy. It’s much older and solid wood. After a LOT of searching, I cannot find a tank or stand comparable anywhere near my budget, even if I sold the one I have now to help with cost.
Eventually I will get a more shallow tank, but if I remove the canopy, I can reach bottom of tank with a well made step ladder. So that’s the plan.

They have been around for a long time and have mixed reviews. Most of the negative reviews are due to QC issues like sloppy seams. If there was enough of a price difference I would buy from them and spend a little time cleaning things up.
