Hi guys new to the reef environment just wondering when I build my reef will I need to glue my reef together or can I just place everything in

I prefer to stack the rocks so that they hold themselves in place rather than epoxy them together. I also have some of them drilled and use fiberglass driveway marker poles to stabilize them. I do epoxy the rod into the bottom piece, but anything on top can just slide right off.

And remember - place the rocks on the bottom (or on eggcrate if you want), then add the sand. If the base rocks are on top of the sand any diggers/sifters or even strong flow can erode the sand away and cause a rockslide.

There will come a time when you HAVE to get someplace and can't because of the epoxy.

Some of the most artistic "floating" rock formations in tanks are acrylic rod/epoxy and/or cement and they are awesome to look at. I stack 90% of my rock, and only epoxy/cement the pieces that behave precariously. I agree with @Billdogg that you sure don't want a 120lb solid structure that you can't remove without a small crane.

So, I'd like to think that my best experience has been with stacked rocks with rare fused braces that help the overall stability. But if counter-levered floating artsy structures are your thing, you'll need to lean way more towards the fixing/fusing of rock.
