So I've invested in alot ( not really alot at 1$/pack lol) of superglue over the past month due to my Mexican turbos breaking my frags off my rocks (was never an issue before until now). I decided to invest the $10 bucks in the marineland two-part putty. So far it seems to be holding up against the onslaught of Mexican turbos.:beat_brick: Anyone have any input on whether to use putty or superglue with corals and frags? or any ideas on good glue that works well in water? Thanks

One of my fish stores uses putty, the other Coraffix. I haven't used putty myself but he just gets a glob, puts it on a rock, and pushes the zoas right in. I love my coraffix, it works great and dries underwater. It's made specifically for gluing coral.

You can use the aquamend from home depot. Just turn your skimmer off for a while.

I use both.:D Put a drop of superglue then putty then another drop of glue on top of the putty. The glue holds the frag in place til the putty sets. Doing it this way you can mount them upside down if you want

I do the same thing. I think is the most secure way to mount most corals

That might be what the label says, but Coraffix is nothing but relabeled super glue gel.

The same goes for various epoxies, Marineland, Two LIttle Fishes, whatever brand, it's just relabeled plumbers or underwater 2 part epoxy sticks. Though the one thing that can differentiate them is their color, but the coralline colored stuff looks silly to me.

By the way, it just depends on what I'm glueing... Sometimes I use one or the other, sometimes I use both like Joey described.

Have you used the Coraffix? I used some super glue gel but it was just a whole lot harder to work with than Coraffix. I don't know if I was using the right super glue gel or not.

I have not used it, but I've seen it and it appears to be the same as Bob Smith Ind. glue which is the gel super glue I use. I also use the Loctite easy squeeze because of how nice the dispenser is.

I like IC Gel because the tip never dries out, but only if you touch the tip to something wet. I have left tubes with the cap open for several hours with no proplems. Now Corafix thats a whole another story. I will never buy it again.

I just use the superglue gel. I have not had good luck with the putty (even with the methods above). I mean they work, but I like just using superglue gel. I can glue about 2 frags to rock underwater with one tube, and it is like $1/ tube. And I use as little glue as I can when attaching frags to disks, find that they encrust a little faster with less glue. but thats MO.

Thanks for all the input. I might try and use the aquamend from home depot. I do like using the superglue for gluing smaller frags to discs but the putty so far is holding strong to the live rock. I guess I'll try some new stuff out and see what works!

Aquamend is good for getting your frag mounted on an irregular surface. It will conform to whatever surface you are mounting on. But as has already been mentioned, it does not always adhere very well. For that reason, I put a little super glue on each side of the Aquamend "gob" when I mount.

I use aquamend and super glue to fix change to the concrete in front of the homeless shelter. Who knew I could use them in my tank also! :)

It really depends what your gluing. Any super glue gel will work just fine for attaching small frags to rocks and small rocks to other rocks. When I have an irregular shape like a frog spawn skeleton that I want to keep in place I use Coralline Purple Reef Epoxy from BRS. It works just like the Aquamend from Home Depot but the color matches the Coraline in my tank so it looks natural right from the start.

+1.....

I use glue or putty depending on what I'm setting on a frag disk. SPS will likely get glue + putty, chalice frags just glue, etc.

But mostly I'd get those mexican turbos out.. don't those things get HUGE?! They'll just end up knocking over everything....
