I just bought a used pump that has a SCH80 spears union already glued to the volute and I need to connect to the rest of my system’s plumbing, which is SCH40.

can i glue a SCH80 union to a SCH40 pipe or are the sizes incompatible or will I risk leaks in the future?

As long as they're the same measurement I believe you should be fine (1" with 1")

The difference between the two is the thickness of plastic, but it's internal/external diameter where the difference lies. As far as connecting to each other they're fine.

The wall thickness is greater on the the 80 but that only affects the inside diameter. Both 80 and 40 will have the same outside diameter. I’m no plumber so I can’t speak to if this against best practice. However if you’re asking will it fit, then yes it will.

You'll be fine.

The wall thickness on the 80 is thicker, but the outside diameter will be the same as the OD on a similar piece in sch40.

The two schedules can be mixed and matched without worry ... unless you're using it a very high pressure situation (non-reefing obviously) that calls specifically for sch 80.

As with ANY pvc plumbing, dry fit first to make sure everything mates together the way you want it to.

Thanks all! This is really helpful!

You'll be fine. I'm a mechanical plumber, and I have had to do this numerous times transitioning from sch80 to sch40.

I just use a use a piece of sand cloth or sand paper, lightly clean whatever end you are gluing together. A little bevel on the end of the pipe, prime the pipe really good, put primer on the face of the end you are gluing ensuring you have a good area of adhesion and the joint in going to not leak.

I have tested these transition joints up to 100 psi and never had a leak or bad joint.

I have sch40 and sch80 throughout my system .... no incompatibility problems.
