Will be going out of state for 10 days. Do you guys keep your skimmer running as usual and just remove the top (in-sump), throttle it down or shut it down?

I use my skimmer for mostly oxygenation and my dry skimming would take 1-2 weeks to fill the cup. 1-2 weeks I make no change. Over two weeks, I connect a drain tube to the cup and just drain it back into the sump.

You could get a Davy Jones Locker from Avast. They're amazing

I use an RO auto waste collector which is similar to the Davy Jones Locker. They work great for us lazy reefers, but the one bit of caution is for vacations. If something causes your skimmer to overflow while you’re gone, it will be shut off for the rest of your trip.

I'm away often and adjust the skimmer before leaving. Dry skimming does not remove as much waste, but still get the oxygenation benefits. When I return I adjust to pull out more waste and then I can empty it more frequently

I have a 5 litre plastic container (old liquid container) in both my systems which is used as a permanent drain for the skimmer cups

But it must be sitting inside the sump in case of overflow or the skimmer overskimming. It will last weeks/months depending on amount produced

Same here don’t know why people don’t always do this. Mine runs like this even when I am home just in case something happens. The worst thing that happens this way is you can build up bubbles in your sump but way better than flooding.

Me too, they are in place all the time, makes it so much easier especially when you only clean the skimmer cup every 3 months or so….! lol

I’m surprised your skimmer fills up that fast. Are you sure it’s set properly? Mine usually take 2 months or more to fill up.

Set up a camera to watch your tank and your sump.

I dial back my skimmer a little and just watch it from my phone. If the skimmer or ato have a problem i can shut them off or restart them from phone. Definatly would run it tho cuz if you running auto feeder it can dump some crazy food in there.
