Gold nugget rescue

I rescued a gold nugget that was being beat up pretty badly. Big chunks of the tail are missing. I was planning on putting him directly into quarantine. Should I dose with CP or go with antibiotics? He currently looks great aside from the missing fins.

I would first give it some antibiotics if it has torn up fins and stuff to reduce the risk of infection. You want to get it's immune system back into gear too so I would feed it a variety of different high quality foods and treat them with selcon or some other vitamin supplement.

If the qt is indeed sterile or has been emptied out & cleaned up, I would just leave it without any meds and monitor him. Maybe a bit is stress coat but that’s about it.

That's a great sign, just keep offering that to the little fella and it will turn around in no time

He came from a tank loaded with fish that had ich/possibility velvet.

If think I’ll give him a day and dose cp tomorrow I don’t want to wait too long.

I would consider an acriflavine bath as an antiseptic, for the fin wounds and parasite bites, to help ward off infection.

If you suspect velvet, I agree that it's best to start the CP sooner than later.

I have acriflavine ms on hand. I can give him the bath tomorrow then place him in cp dosed tank after.

If possible yes, just keep an eye on your water temp and make sure it stays aerated throughout.

Last question. I have a sponge filter that has been in my sump for probably 6+ months.
It has a bunch of life on it. If I dose the cp will my ammonia get out of wack?

Possibly, but you can use Prime with CP if needed.
