Hi everybody, my tank is 4 weeks and 3 days old. For the last week and a half or so golden brown-reddish brown stuff has slowly been accumulating on my rocks and in/on my sand. I’ve found a few air bubbles (like maybe seven total) and it doesn’t seem stringy. On the other hand I can’t just siphon it off my rocks. I’ve tried to siphon it out of my sand and it doesn’t really seem like it comes out of there either. It’s not gloopy either and it’s definitely increasing but not at an astonishing rate.
Currently the tank houses five or six snails (2 trochus and 3 or 4 cerith. I put 4 in and they all buried themselves but since then I’ve only seen 3 at a time so I don’t know if one died.). I have two tiny LPS coral frags and some bristle worms that arrived as hitchhikers along with some pods. How do I figure out what this stuff is (Cyano, Dinos, diatoms, something else?) and if it’s caused by too many nutrients or too few nutrients? I have a Red Sea test kit on its way to test calcium, magnesium and all. I have an API kit for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. As I’m typing that out I’m realizing there is a gap where a phosphate test should be. Most stores are shut down where I am and the state is reporting many more cases every day so I’m not sure when I’ll be able to get that test. I’m on day 2 of a blackout and it doesn’t seem to be making a difference. What are my next steps?
