Hawaii should open up again. Rumor has it. Lol
Angler is super cool at feeding but just chills rest of the time. They are also short lived in captivity. I kept the last one for 2.5 years and it was pretty unusual.

before I got the eel, I read someone say “one of the coolest animals in my tank” I tend to agree.

Yes, It made my reef reefy.

yes, added a month ago, ate on the second day, and every 3-4 days thereafter. Fed him market shrimp meat.
Mix the food up, clams, shrimp, squid etc.

if you stress them, like move around rock work, they’ll sometimes go on a food strike.

Sure do! Till date the resident tangs aren't allowing it to explore.

I think some wholesales are selling them out of Tahiti or the Philippines. They may be collected in Hawaii. But I saw one recently and was told "collected in the Philippines" I was also told it was rare to find them there. It was in fact a true species im looking for but I was to slow to purchase.
I'm sure once in a while the pelagic fry make it to neighboring islands and actually survive at other islands, albeit rarely. This happens with other endemics, like some end up near the Johnston Atoll I believe.

Does anyone know where to get a golden dwarf eel? I know they are hard to get due to hawiian ban. I know a few have been coming from the Philippines also.

Let's see some pictures and share your experiences with them. How long have you kept one? Are they invert and reef safe?
Ive been looking for one for a while, never seen one in stock anywhere! I had to go with a different eel species. I have a snowflake, ghost ribbon, and a jeweled. Inverts get eaten all the time in my tank lol. I replace hermits a lot, but use stars, cucumbers and snails in mine. My jeweled will also eat small fish.

Edit just noticed the thread dates

It's still a valid thread. They haven't been any easier to find.

I've had my guy for 8 years. He was tiny when I got him so I assume he was a baby. Hopefully he lives many more years, because I don't know where to find one.

I found one at my LFS last year. Unfortunately, I forgot to close the lid last night and found him this morning on the ground dead . Absolutely heartbroken today.

He stayed this gold even after more than a year of husbandry in my tank.

Video of him in my observation tank when I first got him

Was he fully dead? Ive had eels jump and been out of water for 12 or so hours and thrown them back in and theyve recovered

Interesting dwarf. Didn’t know there was a 12” species

Ya I was hoping he would maybe recover so I put him back in the tank but he was pretty stiff and stuck to the concrete floor. Maybe because it’s a dwarf, they aren’t able to survive as long outside of the water?
