Hey guys,
I've been trying to research how long my little guy can live for and have seen/heard carrying numbers. I read on an old forum post (2009 reef central) that they can live 30+ years if cared for perfectly while other sources have said around 10 years plus. Does anyone know the actual number?

I’m not sure but my aunt had hers climb out of the canopy and jumped to the floor and was on the floor for a minimum 1-2 hours. She put it in the tank and it was somehow still alive. I know they are tanks lol

Ya, eels are tanks. Truly incredible that they can do that. Anyone else know what their full lifespan could be?

I've hard stories of eels being dried up carpet surfing for 12 hours and placed back in the tank in hopes they are somehow alive and somehow they recover. Magic sea dragons I tell ya. You have to read that last sentence out loud in your best pirate voice.

I have no idea how long the live. I've heard from 5 years to 20 years. I know saltwater fish in general are long lived, I've seen tangs in videos that have been in captivity for 20+ years. There's a guy on here that has a 21 year old pair of clowns that still spawn regularly. I would guess, giving the hardiness of eels, that they would be a long lived fish in captivity where they have no predators to worry about. Oh and that great big carpet surfing adventure.

Thanks for the info. I don't see any reason that they couldn't live to 20+ given the hardiness and the fact that many large morays live past 20.

I agree. Seems 20+ is normal for well cared for fish in our hobby. I know a lot don't make it there due to disease and tank crashes. Eels are almost immune to marine ich and velvet, altho they can give the parasites to other fish, so I'd say the biggest killer of eels in home aquariums are...
1) Carpet surfing
2) Exploring the overflow/sump/return pump/powerhead(mostly ribbon eels)
3) Extended power outages with no generator
4) Poor diet

Couldn't agree more

What kind of tank do you have him in? He looks awesome

It's not obvious at all that you love him!

I would take carpet surfing off the list for biggest killer for eels lol

What's minimum tank size for these guys? Aggressive?

He's in a 30 cube and is about 8 inches long. They get to be 10-12 inches but dont swim a ton. H
