I know this is a saltwater forum but I'm kinda really in a emergency kinda, and this forum and the people reply a lot faster. So anyone with freshwater tanks please help!! My goldfish tank is really cloudy, I don't know what to do!!! My parameters are all in check its just really cloudy. Tank has been up for a year! 4 small goldfish in a 40 gallon breeder with a lot of filtration!!! Please help!!! It's really cloudy! Everything else like parameters are fine. I think it is a bacteria bloom. It's whiteish. Water changes didn't help. Waiting did not help!! Please

A bacteria bloom in a 1yr old tank would likely happen if u suddenly killed off all of your good bacteria either during a water change or by significantly changing water parameters. When did you first notice the water being persistently cloudy? I know this is painful but if you want a good diagnosis you need to spell out what type of filtration/filtration media you have. In the meantime, make sure filters are operating correctly, all media has been rinsed thoroughly in tank water, & media and filters have been properly reinstalled. Also, check to make sure you do not have a build up of food or waste in your gravel bed by vacuuming. Hope that helps.

Try about a tablespoon of Activated carbon on mesh bag and put where there's alot of water flow, like inside a HOB.

Just recently added new bag of carbon a couple days ago maybe a week nothing changed, just more cloudy due to me waiting it out to see anything happens. I have a Aqua clear 70 with whisper 30, a whisper 20 and another filter I'm not sure about looks about like a 20 gallon filter. I did rinse the sponges in old tank water, added a bag of carbon. Stuck some more filter floss inside of another filter. And nothing has changed yet

I do have dr tims instant cycle thing with his ammonia, do you recommend me dump half of it inside the tank? Not the ammonia cause I don't want my goldfish to go through that. So maybe add his beneficial bacteria to the tank and let it run its course and let the bacteria re grow with my bio load?

Also deep cleaned gravel, the goldfish always pick at it anyways. So I don't think any bad air bubbles that polluted the tank

Don't add more bacteria, it is a bacterial bloom so you have more than enough bacteria in the tank already. Leave things be, don't change water, don't mess with the filters. The bacteria population will come back down to normal in a week or so.

The only other thing to do if it really bothers you hook up a uv sterilizer, but the bacteria is not harmful.

The deep cleaning of the gravel is likely the cause. When you do maintenance on the tank alternate clwaning the filters with the gravel cleanings.

Going through the same thing on my goldfish tank right now. All fish and shrimp seem fine, so all I do is a water change every few days.

So I should not do anything to my tank and wait it out?! Just let it cloud up like crazy to where I can't see my fish and it will eventually go away???!!

Every fish tank needs a strong biological filter. In yours I'm guessing it's the gravel or do you have more? If its only the gravel and that has been disturbed, cleaning, etc you will have issues. Also old filter media will have some biological, if that was cleaned, changed or disturbed you can have issues. Anytime you mess with biological you most likely will see an ammonia spike of some sort and you will interfere with the biological process. You really should have multiple biological working so when you mess with one the others are still working strong. Has the tank ever been cycled?

Tank is fully cycled no ammonia and no nitrite with 15 nitrate. Cloudy water.

Let the water cloud up, it will crash. As long as there is no ammonia you are fine. By doing water changes during this bloom, you are replenishing a food source for the bloom, so you are sustaining the bloom. By leaving it alone they will deplete their food source and go back down to their normal population.
