My goni has been like this since I placed it. It seems happy and extended, but the tips don't really open.
Is it getting too much light?

I've noticed the bottom ones are a bit more open.

I think it looks good tbh it could be the flow or the light in that space of water there. All in all should be okay unless the polyps start to retract then I’d be worried

Thinking same thing, light intensity too high, flow too much?

I've had it for a couple of weeks. Doesn't seem stressed or anything. I could push it back into the cave a bit to get it into lower light, but then I'm afraid the flow would be too low. Everything I've read on Goni says moderate to high flow

I pushed it back under the overhang a bit during my water change yesterday. It is definitely showing better extension, but the tips are still mostly closed. I am noticing that the lower polyps are more open.
Think it will acclimate to the light it's getting? Or should I move it to more shade?

I have different groups of them and they all get lots of light (5 xr30 pro) and plenty of random flow as I run 4* mp40 and 1* mp60.

Do you know par? Reef builder just did a video with a goni keeper and he mentioned them living very low light. I have two that have just got smaller and smaller in my tank. Trying to figure out if it’s light. I do feed them a lot so it can’t be that. Alk 8.5 and nitrates 5 phosphates .05-.1

Par on the bottom of my tank is ~200. The red, violet, green, blue and tri-yellow are all out in the open. The baby blue I just got is more so within an overhang as it was not opening under the direct light. Alk is typically 8/8.3 cal 440/480 mag 1220/1240. I do broadcast feed reef roids twice a week, nothing direct, also use Red Sea AB+ daily 50ml and for dosing use ATI essentials pro with my AWC running 5g per day.

if its the light they will get used to it, since there tubes” are extended they can’t be getting fried or they would be more retracted -id leave them where they were give them consistent light and they will adjust-of course they love aminos &reefroid basting weekly

Tubes are more retracted for me. All my euphyllia are doing well tho. ICP tests came back ok too. Goni still has color just not growing

On Goni Peninsula, all them change their extension randomly. I think it has to do with the random flow. I have my gyre set at alternating waves from side to side, but also randomly spiking high and low.

So all the gonis act differently and at different times depending on the flow. Sometimes they are tightly bunched and extended low like a buzz cut. Sometimes they are wavy and random and long.

The lighting level is a bit much, admittedly, around 250-300 par but I have a maxima clam nearby. I always acclimate them to the 200 ish range starting with 100 if I procure a new one. I would recommend lower par in general unless you have a light lover like a clam next nearby. But gonis can adjust.

They are rarely spot fed, only when I'm bored. They soak up alk and calc so if those aren't higher for their skeleton ball (or encrustation, depending on the species) then they will grow slow or not at all.

Goni's are easy. Especially the aquacultured fragged ones. Your' gonis fine. As long as their polyps aren't retracted completely into the ball for days at a time. One day is fine. Over a week of no polyp extension however, then you got problems and expect receding tissue soon if it has gone that far for a week or more. Check your water parameters or light.

Change your flow depending on how you like the polyps, long or short. They will adjust their polyp extension to match the waves. You don't need a specific water flow type to raise them. Gonis are like cats. Sometimes my gonis retract randomly, annoyed for some reason for a few hours. Sometimes a day. Maybe Mr cleaner walked all over them. Maybe willie nipped one trying to get a baby aiptasia near them. Who knows. I wouldn't worry. Keep your alk calc up, and all the other basic parameters in check, they will be fine.

I don't have a skimmer. I'm thinking of getting one out of boredom. But goni's don't mind a little nutrient rich water.

Here's a quick shot I just took. See how all the goni's and alve's have random length extension of polyps? Some are short some are long. Even ones of the same species! They even change on some days. It depends on the flow, since my flow is a bit random. Except for the encrusting ones. Those are always low polyp extension with micro sized polyps.
