Hey y’all! I’ve had this Goni for a couple months now... and it’s never extended past this point. The polyps look big and healthy, great color and response to light but they just never extend. They didn’t extend at the LFS either. Is there a short tentacled goni or something? It’s growing and the polyps are multiplying but the tentacles just aren’t coming out. Any suggestions? Medium light and pretty good flow. First pic is from April and the others I took today. Goni is on the far right, about half way down.

Gonis can be very temperamental. A change in water chemistry can cause them to close up for a week or more. As long as it isn't completely retracted into its skeleton, or losing tissue, there's a good chance it will recover and fully open.

Thanks! But this one has never ever opened. It’s actually gotten a tiny bit better from the first photo back in April. I don’t think it’s sick, just wondering if there’s a short tentacles goni, or if it’s not even a goni at all?

We had the same issue with three of our goni's as mentioned before they can be very temperamental. We were able to get them to extend with time, amminos and a/b+. It was a few weeks to a month process but we got them both to extend.

We also had similar issue with the hair algae, we removed the goni from the plug/rock that had the algae which seemed to help.

The red, neon green and the smaller piece on the left of the green... all the similar closed up issues.

They are currently in low/moderate flow, par is about 80-90

What did it look like before you bought it?

And to be honest, it does look more like an alveopora to me. The tentacles on each polyp are relatively thick and short, and this is more typical of alveopora. Goniopora tentacles are thin and longer.

Here's a comparison pic of two in my tank. Goniopora in back, alveopora in front.

Pretty. The blue one is an alveopora.
Ya the big one on the right is, the one next to the neon to the left is the goni, that one was the toughest to bring out. At the LFS is was fully extended, at home for months like 3 months it wouldn't fully extend. spot feeding/dosing in our opinion did the trick

Yes there are short tentacle varieties as shown below. It does not resemble yours but yes not all Goniopora exhibit long flowing tenticals/polyps. Once your piece gets larger you will know for sure.

Thanks all! The goni looked exactly the same at the store as it does in my tank. It’s not alveopora because I have 2 of those and it looks very different irl. Sorry the pictures aren’t the best. @Tahoe61 looks super similar to what I have and that colony looks like it’s doing pretty well, I can only wait and hope! I do reefroids maybe 3x a week and spot feed everything so here’s hoping it starts extending a lot. Thanks everyone for your input :)

Goniopora has 24 tenticals on polyp head.
Alevopora has 12, and I do not believe I have ever seen a red Alevopora..

Mines been like that for 6 months now, It occasionally comes out for a day then gets ticked again. As long as its not retracting fully I wouldn't worry too much as they get most of their nutrients from lighting. Mines even grown in width but I have never gotten the long flow look from it. Now my Acro on the other hand are going nuts lol...

Sounds a lot like my tank... crazy growth on the acros but the lps are doing meh. Eating like crazy... always have feeder tentacles out, but not really expanding all the way and I feel like they’re putting out new heads kinda slowly... might just be because I’m watching them 24/7 cause no school
