I have been looking at some really cool Goniopora corals and was thinking they would look great in my tank but I know very little about them. Could anyone give me a quick Goniopora 101 lesson. How much light, flow and food do they need, are they going to be aggressive, what placement do they do best in and so on. Thanks for any help you all can give

Shep.

They are considered moderate to difficult to keep. If you do not have an established tank that has success with other LPS corals i would wait a bit.

If you do get one. They are moderate to high light and moderate current. They are basically filter feeders, however mine have eaten brine shrimp. They need powder or liquid food a few times a week. Letting it stay in water column for awhile before skimmer or filter system can remove it. Until you have success with them, success is at least a year. Stick with an encrusting type. The ball forms are much more difficult to keep. I place mine on sand bed with something to keep it edges getting buried in sand. They are prone to brown jelly disease.

They are one of the hardest corals to keep! I've had mine since April this year and almost lost it.....I started off a FOWLR tank has been running 1yr before I started adding any coral added some good live rock, got a RO/DI unit which is a must!!!! 48" MarineLand LED Reef light all is doing well. The water flow is moderate and placed midway in my 90G. take a look.......

Thanks for all the feedback, my tank is a 20g that is a little over a year old. I currently have a number of LPSs and SPSs but I was looking for something that was different than the normal but I think I will wait before I try caring for Gonioporas.
