I am new to the saltwater tanks and looking to better understand the chemistry behind them. Are there any particularly good books that I could get that either A: describe the chemistry in aquariums, and/or B: explain water chemistry in general and include those elements specific to aquariums?

I know there are tons of books out there and I could buy any of them but thought I might get some helpful recommendations from people that own some that are particularly good

I know this might sound elementary to some on this site but when I first started I bought Saltwater Aquariums for Dummies. It legit goes through all the basic chemical ideas behind keeping a good marine aquarium. It does not go into much sps reef chemistry but it thoroughly explains the nitrogen cycle, phosphates, nitrates, nitrites, live bacteria etc.

If you know all that already use this site The.

Whoever writes the stuff is in depth and explains in detail (if you look for those pages) the ionic composition of saltwater, studies that back the theories explained, and some good overall info on what we put into our tanks and why. Other than that my knowledge just came from reading forums, research papers and searching in google. Hope that helps a little.

Here is a link to all of Randy Holmes-Farley's articles I reference all the time:

Reef Chemistry Articles - Reef Central Online Community Archives

I know it is a different forum, but I couldn't find a way to copy all the links over here without getting database errors... I would recommend getting those links over here and putting it up as a sticky.

I would recommend book-marking THIS site.

Oops. is this the same as the one above?

Shoot, skip my link and use his... His doesn't involve another reef forum archives. It is all you need to know plus more related to chemistry in a reef tank.

Thanks for the link! Ideally, I was looking for a book specifically so I wouldn't have to rely on reading a computer screen. But these articles are great! Just as easy to print the articles out and put in a binder.

Wow, that's Old School!
Jk whatever works for you.

Thanks Steven. I just ordered that book and another, more general marine reef book.
