So do any of you know what is the best cuc for diatoms because I'm ready to buy/build up my cuc and if you look In the photo then you'll see the diatoms are to a point where I need to fix them. Should I go snail or crab route. This is a reef so try to keep it all reef safe.

Almost all is on my rock work no in the sand yet but some on the glass. Got that with mag float

Diatoms are just a normal part of setting up a aquarium. Diatoms usually will feed on all the silicates in the sand and then they leave. Just add a few algea eaters and a few derititus eaters and you will be fine.

I dont like hermits so much as they are opportunistic, and if hungry will munch on corals. What you want to get are sand sifting snails, bumble bees, turbos, conchs, but diatoms tend to take care of themselves in a matter of weeks, I wouldn't worry about them.

Thanks reefing madness you were a great help! I'll wait and see If the diatoms starve out then I'll add a fish and a small cuc. After the tank 100% stabilizes I'll add my first coral.

Diatoms are nice organisms that use silicates to make their shells. They will use up all the silicates in the aquarium then die off. This usually means you are nearing the end of your cycle.

Once the tank is cycled and you ammonia and nitrite read 0 do a WC to reduce the leftover nitrate and get your first coral!

By the way reefcleaners sells a package of sails for $20 shipped that would be perfect for your size. It's what I did with my 50 cube

+1 just a normal part of a new tank. patience. it will pass in a week or so. Add a few snails. I wouldn't add a bunch, as a new tank it may not be quite ready yet. If the snails do well for a few week, then add more. just my $.02
