It's negative 7 degrees F. Ice fishing season is here. Saw some pics of someone out yesterday...it was minus 15 I think....no thanks....I'll wait until February when it "warms up".

Ice fishing is crazy. The lake out here is very large and a river of ice and water run across the top of the ice sheet. Many people ride their snowmobile across it. The people ice fishing wind up being in 1-2 feet of ice and water. It's mostly an excuse to drink I think. I can't think of any other reason why someone would intentionally do that.

The local kids are at the house and saved several of my frags from the pincushion urchin! Thank goodness for ship Wi-Fi and FaceTime! I had to coach them through the rescue process. I have a love/hate relationship with that urchin. I love the cleanup work he does, but I hate it when he steals my frags! :rolleyes: These frags are still light acclimating and will be glued to the rock in a few weeks. Hopefully, the urchin will behave until then! Meanwhile, back to vacation. I just might need something fruity with a little umbrella! :D

Depends on what you target and where you fish. It is probably easier for me to ice fish certain places that it would be to put a canoe or boat out in the summer. Just walk to the spot, drill a hole, close up the shelter, catch dinner.

Plus all the hatching bugs die by October and the rivers start forming edge ice by December.

There are some amazing lakes really close by that don't have a river of ice and water on top. Henry's lake is the distance and it has some amazing fish in it. Quake and wade lakes, in the middle of Hegben and Henry's, are two of my favorite lakes. 30 plus inch browns. The rivers around here never freeze over. Crazy seeing how it gets to 50 below 0.

My coworkers parents just bought a house in Idaho not far from Henry's Lake, maybe 30 minutes away. I told her if she doesn't learn how to fly fish she's missing out.

Vermont recently opened most rivers and streams to catch and release, artificials only in the off season....of course we happened to be getting much colder weather this year. Most of our freestone rivers lock right up by January, but there are a few you could fish if you really, really wanted to.

Some people still fly fish out here. The biggest challenge is keeping your guides from icing over. I'll pass. I get about 100 to 150 days on the river most years. I don't need to be uncomfortable doing it.
The rivers around here all have geysers pouring water in them. Just enough to stop them from freezing.
Doesn't Tom Rosenbauer live in VT? I love his podcasts and books. He had one of friends on last year. You should definitely come visit her in a year or two. This area is the mecca of fly fishing.

Yes I think he does. I was down in his neck of the woods this past fall, Batten Kill area, fished a little bit, went to Orvis, and booked a summer vacation week down at the Rockwell Retreat...so I got to do my research on the local hatches.

Some day soon, too many places out west to (re)visit.

Now isn't a great time to visit. Hoot owls and too many people. The fish need a break. And the rivers. A lot of people are just camping wherever they feel like and litter is just falling off them. I'll bet you can get an amazing deal on an RV in about 3-4 years after they find out how much work is involved in maintaining them.

Good Morning! It's a pleasant 1 this morning with no wind. The snow is still snow and hasn't turned to ice so the roads and parking lots aren't slick. I might break out the fly tying vice this evening and start getting ready for the fishing season. I usually think this though and wind up having to tie them last minute. I only about 75 this year so it isn't too bad. i had to tie a couple hundred last year. If I would stop catching rock and tree fish I wouldn't even need that many. Have a great day and stay safe!
