A Memorial Day fact everyone should know is that the first observances of what we now refer to as “Memorial Day” were intended to honor those who died in battle during the Civil War. Claiming more lives than any other conflict in U.S. history, the Civil War required the establishment of the nation’s first national cemeteries, according to History.com.

It began as a grassroots movement

Long before Memorial Day became a national holiday in 1971, and almost two years before its first official observance in 1868, local springtime tributes to the Civil War dead had been held in various municipalities. One of the first occurred in Columbus, Mississippi, on April 25, 1866 (not quite a year after the end of the Civil War), when a group of women visiting a cemetery to decorate the graves of Confederate soldiers placed flowers upon the bare graves of Union soldiers, as well, in the spirit of national unity. That's super funny. Why do I have these giant scratches all over my arms.... It's almost like a Maine Coon cat attacked me....

Yup...you must not have seen my original post on that one where my youngest son (now 27 or 28) woke up with scratches...He informed me why. hahahahaha Have not had an Ambien since.

Thank you for posting this...I turn blue in the face explaining to someone never to thank me for my service on Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day. Veterans day is fine in my case but I don't need the thanks really. :)

Going to be a pleasant day...low temp in the '80s with a 5 to 10 mph breeze and low humidity...great day for riding the H-D...yeah right!

Try Desert weather as I'm 100 miles up the road.

EDIT: my brain is still cooling and forgot to write good morning.
