My tank is full of these and they're crawling on my torch which hasn't been doing well. Does anyone know which type they are?

Awesome, thank you both!

how many do you think you need for them to get out of control and what happens in that case?

You'll know, the only issue is keeping them fed. Amphipods breed very fast and consume an insane amount of food.Unlike other inverts, they continue to breedat these rates when food per pod declines (as their pop increases). Once they start starving, they can cause issues. I've experienced it a couple of times. I had about 3,000-4,000 in my 65G at one point.

If you have a wrasse or something that will keep their population in check then you're fine.

They are a very effective clean up crew, I wouldn't worry about them.
