Hi all,

There seem to be all sorts of different methods for calcium, alkalinity dosing and some of them are very cheap. Is there a good source for "DIY" GFO? A gallon of standard grade GFO is $70 at most places. There has to be a better option, right?

Not going to dose LaCl in case someone is thinking of that as an option.

Thanks in advance!

Just my opinion as I have gone through a few brands of gfo. The “cheaper” stuff usually comes so ground down and so fine by the time you rinse it clean 1/3 or more is gone. The best I have come across is the brs high capacity gfo. It’s a bit larger then the rest and has barely any dust and rinses cleans super fast, plus it will bind more p04 before it needs replacing.

This isn’t a sales pitch and I am no way associated with brs, just one reefers opinion.

I really do like the BRS high capacity stuff actually. Barely requires any rinsing and does seem to work well. May actually just end up buying some more of it in fact. But I figured I'd see if there were any creative methods out there otherwise. Thanks!

I thought the same thing! Lol but in end I went right back to the brs hc and just waisted money on anything else.

This is good to know. Maybe I should just buy some of it and move along. My searches really only came up with LaCl as a viable alternative and I'm not keen on that method.

I use both, I run 1/2 the amount of gfo reccomended to maintain levels and every few weeks a few drops of phosphate rx directly into the skimmer when the levels creep up.
