I haven't, but I have heard some good things about them from other people. Honestly, the only one I've heard complaints about that I've listed above is Carolina, and it seems they're usually good regardless.I found algae research supply and was thinking of ordering from them. Can anyone recommend a good source of Tetraselmus phytoplankton? I'd like to culture this specific species.
I got mine from Algae Research and Supply. I wanted a motile species so I'd be able to scope it and verify it was alive. Was a little surprised at first as it seemed paler than the Nannochloropsis I was used to. Also the day after I set the cultures they completely settled and I thought they were dead. They quickly recovered and I've been harvesting 50% weekly for a couple of months now. Initially I kept separate Nanno cultures going as well but somehow contaminated the nanno with tetra and it rapidly took over.I also found this seller on Etsy.

I did not get them but was curious if there are other vendors or anyone within the forum that sells good starter culture.
Thank you for the response. I haven't tried tetra yet and was trying to figure out some details. Do you grow it similar to Nanno? Like 7 to 9 days with same fert and is it good to sit for upto 90 days?I got mine from Algae Research and Supply. I wanted a motile species so I'd be able to scope it and verify it was alive. Yes.Yes, and sort of! I've heard people say they've used cultures many months old to start new ones however I've found even after a couple of weeks in the fridge there is significantly less movement when I scope it. I'm producing 1/2 gal per week and whatever I don't need for my pods goes in my display. My tank is around 150 gals and I add 200-300 mls of phyto daily.Thank you for the response. Ok so I am assuming storage for 90 days but as a starter culture, it's probably a week or two. I have a smaller tank and harvest a gallon nanno from 500ml every 3 weeks or so and it stays good as a starter in the fridge for upto 30 days.Yes.Yes, and sort of! Oops sorry, I meant to say I use 500ml[16oz] of nanno from previous batch and then add 3 litres of fresh saltwater and in a week I get around a gallon. Which is around 1:6How do you harvest a gallon from 500 mls?
I wish I saw this response a few hours earlier. I bought some from mercer of Montana. Next will be from @Eldredge. Right now I have just nanno culture. Going to try Tetra. I wonder if any other culture is as easy as these two?Great source for phyto, supplies and pods, a member here @Eldredge.
Highest quality, fresh, and low prices.
What more could you want?
He has iso and another that requires silicates. Those 2 you mentioned are the easiest, but he can help if you need advice.I wish I saw this response a few hours earlier. Thank you. I am reading through his threads for more information. I might just culture just these two and supplement once in a while with that 8 species blend he has.He has iso and another that requires silicates. Those 2 you mentioned are the easiest, but he can help if you need advice.
My experience is not to start a culture too dilute, add water later if desired.
I subscribe and get a different culture every 2 weeks. 4 1 gallon vessels usually running 2 or 3 varieties.Thank you. I am reading through his threads for more information. I might just culture just these two and supplement once in a while with that 8 species blend he has.
That must be a huge tank. I add probably 3oz a day. But that is an awesome idea.I subscribe and get a different culture every 2 weeks. 4 1 gallon vessels usually running 2 or 3 varieties.
At harvest I dump into a 10 gallon bin with circ pump, lit 6 hours a day. The bin is my source for awcs, 3 liters a day.
75g + 25g + 25g sump. 250 ml dosed every 2 hours.That must be a huge tank. I add probably 3oz a day. But that is an awesome idea.
I'm still experimenting with different dilutions and varying amounts of fertilizer and it's too early to say for certain but thus far I don't feel my phyto gets as dark with much < a 50/50 dilution.Oops sorry, I meant to say I use 500ml[16oz] of nanno from previous batch and then add 3 litres of fresh saltwater and in a week I get around a gallon. What is the ratio for tetra?
Oh wow and it gets consumed every day or do you have a green hint in the water? I have a 55g + 30g sump. No corals yet. Only pods to consume it.75g + 25g + 25g sump. 250 ml dosed every 2 hours.
