OK I'm almost done upgrading my tank so I can start doing sps just need a better skimmer and a doser. I'm just need some ideas on some good looking starter sps I got a red motipora to start but that's it. It's going to be a sps dominant mix reef. I would prefer sticks but open to any suggestions. Thanks

Bump! I don't keep much sps myself sure someone else can make a recommendation.

Montipora Digitata is a rather fast growing coral that is different from other montipora species in that it grows finger like branches instead of encrusting or whirling vase-like patterns.

IMO, this coral is one of the easiest to keep; in the right conditions it borderlines on invasive if not kept in check (fraging).

+1

I agree with the above suggestions. How is the Monti that you have doing. My first 3 were orange cap, montipora spongeods, and green slimmer acro. All are easy to keep and a good tell as to how the tank is faring. and all three under right conditions can grow fast and look great.

Definitely the Monti digitatas. Also Acropora millepora can be pretty rugged for the next rung up.

Monti is doing good so far but time will tell only have had it bout a week.

I can't keep a Monti to save my life! Nobody will agree with me on this, but the easiest for me is Oregon tort.

I know what u mean in my old tank I couldn't keep brains at all but I was OK with almost any other lps but not them but every tank is different. I know some people that have not problems with what is supposed to be difficult coral but can't keep some of the easy ones.

My ora purple stylo grows the fastest, to a point where is taking over the rock, choking other acros out of space. I seriously put kalk paste over an area where it was covering all the rock surfaces. Next would be the bird of paradise...

I had a 1" frag of sour apple birdnest grow to the size of a basketball in a year. I had to break it to fit it inside a 5 gallon bucket

Best thing to start with is what you can find from local reefers. Most of us have multiples sps frags you can get for 5 or 10 dollars that we couldn't kill if we wanted to. For me it is Monti caps, Sour Apple birdsnest, and German Blue Digi.

My first sps was a red planet frag which is pretty forgiving, but outside of that birdsnest and blue stylo. As many others are also saying, Green and Red Montis grow really well and are pretty tolerant making them good starter sps. If you can get one cheap, mystic sunset monti is not a bad choice either.
