Hello everyone ...need little help with a water question i was woundering if water comjng from my house that has been through filter and water softner good enough for my fish only aquarium...thank u

I would look into RO and you said water softener? I don't think that would be good. I know tap water with water conditioner like prime can be used but isn't recommended for long term.

I would just go with "better safe than sorry" and pick up a cheap RODI kit

No not good water. Especially if going through a softener. Might work for a little while but you will regret in the not so long run.

Even with a water softener and other pre filters, our tap water is gross. I'd urge you to get yourself an ro/di unit

Tap water treated with Prime or something similar is ok for a once in a while. But long term can have undesirable results including high silicates, copper from old pipes, high floride like in my area.

Below is a pic of my tank when I tried using tap water treated with Prime for a few months. In my area I ended up with Golden Algae. Nasty slimy algae that nothing ate. It took a few weeks of RO/DI water changes and toothbrush scrubbing to clear it up.

Tap water varies widely from municipality to municipality. My tap water is about 140 TDS. I have heard of tap water running at 20 TDS and up to well over 500 TDS. TDS is total dissolved solutes. It can consist of the relatively benign: Ca, Na, Fe, Cl etc. it can be nutrients like NO3 and PO3 which will cause algal blooms. It can be metallic ions like lead or copper that we really don't want. And it can be weird stuff like herbicides, pesticides, drugs and whatever else. It is not that expensive to run an RODI system and remove the possible problem.
