Google Home or Amazon Alexa

I use the Samsung product at home for some things and it isn't nearly reliable enough to use on my aquarium.

I have both but I use Alexa to turn on and off outlets that I use for water changes.

You will need to buy an alexa-enabled outlet and use their app to set it up. You will then need to enable that "skill" in alexa.

You also need to have the Echo Plus with the built in home controller.

This one will not work. This Echo will not work without a 3rd party home controller.

That is why I am using the Samsung Smartthings controller. But, it doesn't always turn on and off the outdoor lights we currently control correctly. At least 1 or 2 times a month it either doesn't turn them on or fails to turn them off.

I'm not sure what the home controller does, as I do not have one.

All I use is the Echo Dot and 2 alexa-enabled outlets. I use these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N8PCKI0/
(I got them when they were on sale for $14.99 for 2). I configured the outlets with their tuya app, then enabled the tuya skill in the alexa app. I then can tell alexa to turn them on and off. But you can do this with any alexa-enabled outlet, using that outlet's app and alexa app (provided you have an echo).

I started a thread a while back about its use with AI hydra lights. Didn't get far with it.

I am in the process of making my home smart. I have an echo in my living room, a dot in my bedroom and a dot in my kitchen. I have hue bulbs through out the house. I have smart outlets to control my Edison style bulbs in my living room. I plan to complete the lights though out the house. I also want to get a Roomba, and a Nest thermostat are a couple plans that I hope to incorporate within the Alexa setup.

With all that said, this whole smart home wave that is happening right in front of our eyes, doesn't make much sense in the aquarium hobby in my opinion.

Good to know!

I only looked at the wall switch/outlets and as of this summer I couldn't find any directly controlled by Alexa.

You want a box sitting in your home that listens to every word you say? From a company that regularly gets slammed for it's predatory advertising and marketing practices? My wife wanted one... said 'it only records when you want it to'... My answer: How did it know I wanted it to... it was listening, right?

No thanks.

Oh. Thank You Brew for the info.

Thank You Puffy. Is the tuya app free and I just download and use with the Echo Dot and alexa -enabled outlets?
