Is this gorgonian dying, or thriving? Looking at it overall, you can see very active polyp extension, and it even looks like new growth at the tips, but I'm pretty sure there's exposed skeleton at the bottom. So should I feed it or build it a casket?

That is a photosynthetic gorg, so that part is good news. I have that exact species at home. It does seem to be receding near the bottom, so I would check for pests. Not many bother gorgs, but some slugs and snails do. The rest appears just fine. It could be just where you puttied it into the rock. If the bottom was part of the gorg (hard to tell in pics) then it is receding a bit too much.

A good thing to do would be to pull the guy out and give it a Lugols solution bath for 10 minutes or so. I usually make mine a faint yellow to amber color water. This will help with any build up or infection if present.

Very nice large piece. How long have you had it? They can take time to grow. Once they do, make sure to keep sps and lps away from it. The gorgs have too much toxic warfare for most.

Also, this guy has fairly large polyps. That means it eats larger items. They are photosynthetic, but gorgs need to eat! Only maybe 60 - 70% food from sun. Anything from LPS or SPS foods are good such as: reef chili, reef roids, roe, rotifers, phyto, baby brine, etc.

Gorgs love flow, but more tidal than turbulent. This guy can be placed almost anywhere in the tank. Some require specific directions, not this guy.

I've had it for about three weeks, he came with my LR. I actually think the recession was from when I first got him, I was jamming him into the sand as I didn't know what he was or how to care for him. I've done research since then though, and taught myself how to mount him. My mount is ugly, but I think it gets the job done. He had a smaller brother with him when I got him, but the brother didn't survive my ignorance :-(

We have all been there. Not much info on gorgs that is accurate to experience. These guys are tough but need lots of food. Good luck. I hope he grows for you. Remember, they are great at chemical warfare. Keep it in mind with other corals near him.

I will, thank you :-)
