Hey,
I just recently set up my first reef tank and I'm curious about the Platinum Clowns. I haven't found many good pictures. And none that I could compare young to older side by side.
I want to see what to expect from them. Also what is thier personality like?
I am torn between Platinum's and Snowflakes. The lfs always has Snows but not Plats. They do have Wyoming Whites.
Not sure what the difference is between Plats and WY Whites either.

I recently saw a young pair of white clowns and asked if they were WY Whites. (new and still trying to identify on sight).
I was told they were Platinums. Got me curious and I commented on how cool they were.
The owner (produces a show) offered them to me for free. I know this a VERY generous offer but I just don't know.
I really would love to have both in my 125 but get differing opinions on this.

Can you share pics??
Which would you have?
Would you chance having both in a new 125??

The platinums and wyomings look rather different from each other, I'm personaly partial to the WYings as they don't look so grumpy and are a cleaner and crisper white. Platinums alphabet been around longer and are more available, around 150-200 ea depend where you go, where the Wyomings go for 250-299ea
Here's my Wyomings

!!!!! I would have the ones they gave me for free !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What are you waiting for?????? Give them to me if you don't want them!!!!!!!!

I forgot to add my platinum is like a puppy dog. It seems right up to the top of the tank if I am standing near it. I would go for the pair, especially if they are free. How long has the tank been setup?

Depends really what you're looking for. Platinum's white is not very bright and they tend to have some black develop around the edges when they get older. WW seems to stay bright white and pretty consistent as they progress in age.. at least from all the readings I've read. Haven't seen one in person. I'll try to find progression pics of my Plats.

How old are those fish pictured?
I see the platinum has more orange. Want to know if its young or old?

I won't ever spend that much money for a pair of fish. The WYwhites are $600 at the LFS and not even a thought!!!!
I don't know if I'll ever swallow $150 for a fish.
My tank is only about 6 weeks old. It is quite capable as I jump started with about 40 gallons of cycled water. I bought some beautiful Florida LR for $4 a lb off of CL. It had been cured in this guys tank. He knows someone and used to have a store.
Lots of color, some sponge, brain coral, a mushroom, a zoa, some small white tenacled things(anemones??) Emerald crabs. (even HAD a Mantis Shrimp) This is how the rock was harvested.
I've added 3 Chromis, some nice corals, and a BTA and Carpet (Came with the free with the rock and held these in a seperate tank for a month) in the last 2 weeks.
Water tested weekly at the LFS and Im good to go!! :-)

"cycled water" is worthless. "Cycled" refers to the denitrification process, which doesn't take place in the water. The beneficial denitrifying bacteria live in and on solid surfaces, such as rock, sand, glass, equipment, but not in the water column, itself. Using old tank water, to start a new tank, doesn't have any beneficial effect at all.

The live rock you used, if healthy, will definitely help. However, your mention of the possibility of "white anemones" could be a bit worrisome, as could the presence of a Mantis Shrimp. Be aware that that Mantis Shrimp is quite capable, and likely, to kill small to medium fish, in your tank, including the Clownfish you're wanting.

AND, I really want to keep more than 2 clowns. A pair of snowflakes or black onyx.
What are my odds??

You will get a lot of mixed answers to this question and it's difficult to figure out the "odds." I've tried it, with A. percula and A. occellaris, having multiple pairs, in a 200 Deep Dimension. Each time, it was only a matter of a week or less (over night in one instance) before one pair was dead.

Then again, I know an LFS that has a 125 with a large carpet anemone, which is hosting the biggest pair of Maroon Clowns I've ever seen AND a tiny pair of Skunk Clowns...lol.

Speaking of anemone, I'd definitely suggest you rethink the idea of having multiple anemone in your tank, especially multiple species. This usually ends badly.

Here's a pic of the white unknown things.
The center appears brown mixed with white.
I think there is 4 maybe 5 the largest being (pictured) about a nickel in dia.

As for the shrimp I didn't know what it was. I saw it a couple of times moving really fast.
Finally I saw it stationary. I thought, looks a shrimp, looks like a praying mantis.
I googled Mantis Shrimp and low and behold that was it was called. (lucky)
I then got concerned esp. after reading how hard the were to remove.
I got REAL lucky and got it out easily. It then became stray cat food!!
