Hey guys, I just watched a video of a guy on YouTube who had a diatom bloom. Which is what I’m going through. He said the following worked. I need my people on here to help me out if I should give this a go….
Btw I’ll be hopefully getting my RODI unit on Thursday

- removed pump cleaned with RO water
-scrubs glass with a magnet cleaner then the back with algae scrubber
-toothbrush the rocks to loosen diatoms and vac it
-vac diatoms on sandbed
-did a 40% water change (didn’t specify if RO water going back or not
-added Dr tims nitrifying bacteria to sump and some in main tank
- put everything back

said it helped immensely.

my question-
How’s this all this sound? Can I add dr tims after? Do I do all water changes with RODI water?

Please help

To be honest, I would wait until you get your RODI system and make enough water to do a significant water change on your system. The diatoms you have are probably due to silicates in your current water you are using. If you do all this work and just put the source of the diatoms, the silicate back in, the cleaning will be pointless, and the problem will still occur. Wait til you get the RODI water, clean the tank, and than do a water change with the RODI water. You should only be doing water changes with RODI water if you do not want to deal with this and have a reef tank.

Great so I was going to do this for sure! As for dr times should I do that?

Preferably RODI water should be used for all water in a saltwater system. I hear in an established system that adding bottled bacteria is a waste of time/money. The better approach I believe is to feed your current bacteria to encourage it's growth. Bottled bacteria will only last so long in a system that isn't feeding/sustaining its current bacteria. My2cents. Others may think differently.

How can I feed my own bacteria?
