Purigen Reactor:

Guys the Purigen reactor was a great ride, and for a long time it did serve a purpose.

I felt that the lps have grown enough to take up the slack.

So we winged off the Purigen about six weeks ago. The reactor is still inline, but there is no media in that reactor.

Down to shimmering 1/4 cup of Rowaphos and it's the only chemical media that's online.

It's been awhile and thanks for dropping in.

The Cowfish and Blue Streak was way before our clown passed away. Just wanted to update to what happened with those two fish.

Alkatronic:
It's has been up a running for almost two months.

The Bluetooth interface works well with my wife's latest Ipad. I can see it in the WIFI cloud, but have not made the connection to that account, yet.

Programming the unit is as simple as it gets.

My first regent mix was off, but the Alka-T's Baseline Calibration pulled that batch out of the hole.

I've been on full blown Action Mode, with my cal reactor for a fairly long time. I spent $900 so why not see what it can truly do...

I was dumping the used regent back into the GEO tank for a few days, but went back dumping back into the sump.
Have seen not one bad sign of dumping the used reagent back into the sump.

I'll mix a bigger batch for the GEO container, when this batch is used up.

The small pump B is on the loud side, but it's the only gripe that I have.

With the alk holding steady 24/7 my birdnest and others have just started to really burst in new growth.

I feel it does have a very nice niche when paired up to a calcium reactor.

Edit: All the fail safe features seem to be bug free...

Yes,
I'd buy it again, for pairing one up with a calcium reactor.

The birdnest is growing like a weed right now.

I'm still waiting to see if Vader is going to pull thru. I left that coral face down (on the BB floor) for to long.
He lost a lot of zooxanthellae, and just playing it one day at a time.

I want to re-mount him, but I think it's to soon.

We got in there and it's pretty good. Posted if I could do a 2.5 gallon Alkatronic batch mix without it going bad.
The next day a mod on their Facebook gave the green light.

So, I tested the Alka-T and it still matched Salifert (no calibration needed)

Mixed the 2.5 gallons in the GEO container with an 500gph pump, and dumped in the remainder of the reagent that we were using.
Tested the new big reagent batch... ;Nailbiting

Well,
This big batch was tad off, so used the Alka-T's "Baseline Calibration" and dialed it in... ;Woot ;Woot

The new PM1 module was mounted to the wall and we trimmed some of the GEO container's etchings, in white.

Got four of those R2R fish in the bubble quote stickers in the Partner Membership drive.
Just used a pair of scissors and cut the R2R fish out of the bubble quote.

Was trying to go with an orange and white scheme to match the Alkatronic

Pulled the Purigen reactor out last night too. Guess I'll zip tie it's input to the GFO's tubing.

And the constant stream, coming out of the GEO cal reector

Just about to place an order for more Reef Energy and need some of the Red Sea / Reef Spec. carbon too. I like that carbon and bag that comes with it, is pretty nice.

How did you like it vs Carbon?

Tim,

Even though they are both chemical filtration medias, I see both with their strong areas and their weak areas.

If you pack both tight with a lot of flow either one can strip away all your organics. Purgien is so fine that you have to put it in a very small micron filter media bag, and your water will start flow around it fairly soon.

I've ran Purigen off and on for many years with a lot of experience in that product. It can help with nitrates, but will not intake the nitrates that have already ran the nitrogen cycle. I like that it won't leach back organics (for the most part) into the water after it's exhausted like carbon does.

Randy thinks that both are limited from bacteria growing on both medias...
When I dosed Vibrant for BA, that Purigen dose stayed in the reactor the entire time. I recharged with new Purigen when the BA was gone. That old dose was super black and could debate him about that theory... regarding Purigen.

No worries with HLLE in tangs with Purigen, but if you run a good carbon and don't let it grind into small fines, then carbon should be safe too.

Removing treatments, medications or an oops...
Hands down a good carbon all the way.
Treatment and or med. removal is just not a great aspect of Purigen in my mind.

I do like the Red Sea / Reef Spec carbon for the above , It's better than most, but not quite aggressive as ROX.
When I do run carbon (in the sump), it's just to do a certain thing. I have not and don't run carbon 24/7 - 365.

Whether it's right or wrong, to me they both have their pluses and minuses.
