A close friend is setting up a QT, has black gravel in there for aesethetics and convenience. Is this going to absorb meds?

I guess the only thing I could see wrong with it would be that it would be hard to tell if the fish were pooping, and as long as the gravel remained in the quarantine tank. It would make maintenance a little harder too.

I'm sure there will be some interesting opinions on here for sure.

I wouldn't put freshwater gravel in a QT or any saltwater tank. I'm more worried about it trapping poop and uneaten food where he won't be able to see it easily and vacuum it out quickly. Not to mention that the gravel itself may leach things into the water that aren't safe for the fish- a big reason we don't advocate using freshwater ornaments in our tanks as well as pool sand.

This gravel was previously used in a saltwater tank for a few years, if that's helpful. The poop thing is less of a concern because the gravel is black. Does that change anything? They like the aesthetics but not if it endangers her qt

I guess I'm one of those that thinks that if it's not necessary then it shouldn't be in a QT. It doesn't contribute anything at all (except being pretty) and could possibly cause minor issues. I just wouldn't risk it.
