I was having a serious problem with a gray algae until recently when my girlfriend got fed up and got a guy to come out and look. He hadn't seen it before and neither had my LFS when I told them about it after the fact. My water numbers were normal for a LPS tank. The gray algae was coating everything though and every couple of weeks I was grabbing a spare powerhead pump on an extension cord and blasting the stuff followed by using a big net to scoop it up.

The aquarium guy used the re-fresh by Dr. Tim's once a week. I turned off the skimmer and did 8 caps as I have an 80 gal tank. It seems to work, but the real question is...what the heck did I have?!!!

I should have, but I killed it before I took pictures. It wasn't as smooth as a red algae problem or as spiky as a green algae issue. The peaks were about half an inch. It looked like rough slime. Let me see if someone else took a picture.
