how do you seal foam from the water? all i see is "use epoxy" this does not help, what epoxy do i use?

I used actual pond foam from a pond installer in town here. It is UV resistant and he actually called the manufacturer about it to see what it could with stand as for use in a salt water tank. The manufacturer told him the everyday elements of a salt tank are no where near what they put their product through for testing. Also the actual pond foam is UV resistant which I believe is one of the reasons people were using epoxy was to make it resistant.

Sorry I didn't answer your question just letting you know for the little bit more money for the pond foam it may be worth it in the long run.

the thing is your not sealing the foam from the water....the water doesnt do the damage....its the uv light that makes the yellow great stuff turn brown and crumble. yellow great stuff (cheap) and black pond foam (2 to 3 times the price of great stuff) are both closed cell foam and come inert after a 24 hour cure. closed cell means that each little pocket of air is solid and nothing will change that if undesturbed. but if any thing takes a bight at it it will still be good for a very long time....i used the black pond foam too...beckett brand...and i didnt put epoxy on it...my foam just turned 2 years old this month. its still very firm just like it was when i put it on.

her are some pics from about 6 months ago of my 125.....the pond foam is the top center of the tank covering up my 3' long cal flo overflow

As far as I've gathered - pond foam doesn't need to be sealed with anything unless you want to change the way it looks - it's tough stuff, UV and saltwater won't hurt it. But it's $$$. Lots of reefers have been using a product called "Great Stuff" instead, which is a sealing foam used in construction, for sealing door jambs and so on - it's not UV resistant, and needs to be covered to protect it from the tank lights.

so buy pond foam for upfront cost ....

or.....

buy great stuff......cheap....
buy epoxy...depending how much you need could be costly....
mix the epoxy....
spread epoxy....make sure you get it in every where or your great stuff will break down......
now wait for epoxy to go to full cure...could be up to 24 hours......

now all you got to do now is wait and see if your great stuff will last.?.?.?.?

buy the pond foam....less work...less time....less worry .....

I paid I think is was 24 or so for a big can of the pond foam. Love how it worked and like Dave said once you spray it on and have it all done thats it. No need to worry about UV and so forth. I too would agree with Dave and encourage you to get the Pond Foam and be done with it!
