Hi i just got some live rock and its coated pretty evenly in green algae how would I go about removing the algae without harming the rock before you ask it was a gift

Pressure wash it

Remove mechanically as much possible with toothbrush. Rest a turbo snail can take care of . Or just cure it in dark

I have a method but its LIVE as you stated and you want to preserve bacteria.
Place the rock in tank and reduce or turn off white lights for about 5 days. Add 1-1.5 ml of 3% peroxide per 10 gallons at night and after 5 days add snails such as :
astrea
turbo grazer
trochus
cerith

Pin cushion urchin
6-10 caribbean blue leg hermits (these are tiny and safe )

Full blackout best I've found. Might take more than a few days and the die off will feed the bacteria. Brute garbage bag with power head for circulation with a cover to keep spores from entering. Plus in the meantime you keep curing the rock as there might be other passengers and not just algae. If already inside the tank then get painter's blue tape and cover all sides and place a lid over the top to keep stray light from entering.

This was my new build during cycling. Also used the tape to paint the outside. Just left it on until ready for lights. Keeps the ugly stay shorter.
