Hi I’ve have my “used tank” since February, I do my regular water changes and test my water and give it additives, but I just can’t seem to get rid of the green algae, I’ve tried: manually cleaning, algae kill, vodka, increasing the darkness times. The only thing I can think of is this: I can’t clean it crabs and fish don’t really clean it, I don’t know if it’s this that’s causing all the algae or it’s something else. I’m about to the point where I want to remove it from the tank, and start with some new rocks, what does everyone think?

Hi I’ve have my “used tank” since February, I do my regular water changes and test my water and give it additives, What are the numbers and what additives???? I just can’t seem to get rid of the green algae, I’ve tried: manually cleaning, algae kill, vodka, increasing the darkness times. The only thing I can think of is this: I can’t clean it crabs and fish don’t really clean it, What about snails or an urchin????. I don’t know if it’s this that’s causing all the algae or it’s something else. I’m about to the point where I want to remove it from the tank, and start with some new rocks, what does everyone think?
Is this the green you algae talking about? Does it come off with a tooth brush and vacuuming? Algae will grow in a tank unless something out competes it for nutrients. A lot of people use a fuge in a sump or an algae scrubber. Even certain corals will overrun it. Your tank is new and it will pass. Chemicals are not really a good solution. If you can give us some more info we can help.
PS: I dont see it as a problem

I have to clean it off with a toothbrush off of all the other rocks ( I don’t remove it off of it because if I do the species that it is (I’m not sure what it is) (remember I bought this used and the kid who owned it before had it for three years won’t come out for a week or so). in the tank every week, I have snails and crabs and a peppermint shrimp, gobbys, my numbers are in normal range for everything. I use Kent products, essential elements, pro ammonia detox. And I have red cyto that won’t go away either.

Are you using RODI water? Have you tried Trochus or Turbo snails or getting a tailspot or lawnmower blenny?
