Green Algae

How can I get rid of green hairy algae I have a 60 gallon with 15 hermit crabs 1 Halloween crab 3 star snails 1 turbo snail 1 coral Bandit shrimp 1 yellow tang 1 blue jewel damsel 1 green damsel and one clown fish. Should I do more water changes I only do a water change once a month. Thanks in advance for the help guys

First thing you need to figure out is what is feeding the algea. What are your Po4 and p03 levels? How old is your tank? New tanks will go through algea cycels. Once you find the source that is feeding the algea it will start to go away. If you want to speed up the time it goes away a product called algeafix works very well. But if you do not find the source and get it under control it will come right back. You might be feeding to heavy, you can also look into gfo to get Po4 under control.

While you should always try and figure out the reason for the algae and fix that... You can always go with a small bristle tooth tang to help out.

I put a 2" sailfin in a smaller tank to help control hair algae and it did wonders for me. Just remember. Tangs are best reserved for larger tanks. But a small tang in a 60 gallon should be find for a few months.

You can run the light for as little as possible for now to give yourself and the cuc less to do. Water changes wont stop algae. Most can live on single digit ppm levels of nutrients.

Vinegar and a good skimmer can go a long way.

Here's a article on Green Hair I was looking for originally when I posted just found it. Everything you need to know about green hair and how to eliminate it from your tank. Water changes will help reduce the amount of free flotaing Po4 and p03, so yes that will help. Luckily for you gh is one of if not the easiest to kill.... be sure to dip any new coral in hydrogen peroxide and clean the plug with a brush. The last thing you want is to introduce bryopsis to your system.. trust me [emoji6]
