Okay, so in the last week I've increased by light but 100% - don't freak it was only on 4 hours a day, now it's on 8 but still a massive jump I admit.

I did this as my green star polyp (first coral) was going brown. It's starting to improve slightly. Refer to this thread (https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/green-star-polyp-colour.546924/#post-5644436)

My issue is, every 3-4 days my substrate is now covered in green algae. The glass has a light film but the substrate is the worst and I have a palm-sized patch of bubble algae which I'm sucking up.

What is causing this?

I'm also getting a small light and some chaeto to put in my sump to start creating a small refugium

Any help appreciated.

I haven't look at the link you posted yet. However I'll ask these questions and while you give some answers I'll check it out
  • How old is your tank
  • What are your parameters for
  • Calcium, magnesium, alkalinity
  • Nitrite, nitrate and phosphate

Okay. You should get some better test kits for the elements I asked you about. API is not accurate.

I have my lights on for 6 hours no more than 55%. 100% is a lot of light.

tank parameters as requested

Calcium: 450
Alkalinity: 7.0
Magnesium: 1320
Ph 8.0 (api)
Nitrite: 0 (api)
Nitrate 0-5ppm (api)
Ammonia: 0 (api)
Phosphate: 0-0.25ppm (api)
Salinity: 1.025
