First the parameters as I know it will be asked.
60 gal tank with a 10 gal sump. Canister filter as well with no skimmer. I used about 70 lbs of live rock. Used live sand and inert sand as a bed. All of my phosphates and nitrates and all of that other stuff are all good. I do regular water changes of about 10 gallons a week. I know my lights are a little weak, but I have a green bubble nem and one medium to large frag of Sun polyps. I have 2 clowns, a small foxface, a dozen or so various snails, 2 Emerald crabs, 1 cleaner shrimp, and 2 peppermints. I feed frozen a few times a week and also flake daily. It has been running since the day after Thanksgiving.

About 2 weeks ago I went to the LFS and got 4 Green Chromies. The first week all was well. Week 2 I saw one of the smaller of the bunch that looked a little distressed one evening. He seemed to be just hovering and breathing really hard. The next morning he was gone. I mean can't find him anywhere in the tank gone. Looked in the filter sock, broke down some of the rocks, GONE.

About 4 days later I come in to feed and 2 of the Chromies, the clowns and the FF are all there ready to eat. The inverts are all there and excited too. I look and the 3rd Chromie is behind my rocks and comes out very briefly to grab a piece of food or two and then jets right back behind the rock. He refuses to even come out now to feed and just seems to grab a piece here or there that drifts in his area. This has been going on for about 4 days now.

Question 1 is Where in the hell did that first missing fish go???
Question 2 is what should be done about the one playing hide and go seek? I would have to break down the majority of the tank to catch him

Your order fish probably died and was eaten by a shrimp or crab. Nothing to do for Peek a boo guy. Did you quaranteen them?

sadly no. I have just gotten into the hobby and spent what seems like a metric **** ton of money just getting to where I am now. The LFS I go to claims to quarantine and they do dose their tanks as well and dip them before bagging as well.

Wouldn't you at least see a skeleton or something? Can they eat a fish down to nothing that fast overnight (about 6 hours?)

Google chromis disappeared and you will see lots of threads about it.it has happened to me also, I would look and look but no sign of a body.

Your immediate concern is what to do about the living fish. They likely are all infected with a pathogen of some kind. Suggest you start reading the stickies under fish disease, treatment and diagnosis forum--before it is too late. I am in a similar predicament...only about two months ahead of you. Good luck. You can beat this.

Chromis have a reputation of killing each other. The two you lost could have been picked on and stressed by others and died. I have read more than one story of this happening.

+1

It is very common for chromises to pick each other off. A pecking order will establish and all too often the weakest one will be bullied to death. This will continue until there is one chromis left.

Yup.

Clean up crews and bristle worms can dispose of a body in hours. Bones are too small to be noticed.

The bigger of the 4 did nip at the others from time to time. Nothing brutal from what I have seen, but clearly the boss.
I have been watching them and they do not appear to have any marks or issues. Even the guy that is behind the rocks.
What if I took the lead one out? Would that just delay the inevitable that another one would take over the bully role?
Thanks for the feedback folks.

It would help, especially if he's quite a bit bigger than the others. You said you have a sump, right? Maybe banish him there for a couple weeks and try again (if you can easily catch him, which is always my biggest problem).

And yes, clean-up crew can have a small fish eaten in no time.

I had the same thing happen, started with 8. one by one they went missing, only recovered 3 bodies. Sorry to hear about your loss.

Sorry to hear this. It feels like almost everyone at some point buys a set of Chromis and they fight to the death when you aren't looking and only one remains.

They were the first fish in my 150 gallon tank 10 years ago and I literally took apart every piece of plumbing and searched every inch and never found the bodies. I freaked out I had done something wrong and then later heard that is what Chromis do :(

It's a huge shame because they're one of the most coolest, beautiful fish as far as I'm concerned but I can't find a secret to keeping them.
