Green chromis are murderous savages!

They are complete jerks. Completely agree!!

I've had at least 5 in all of my tanks so far. No issues. I've always kept odd numbers and they've always been kept with larger or somewhat active/aggressive fish.

I currently have 5 in my 60 cube which are kept in line by the female snowflake clown who runs the tank. It's not uncommon to see her dart out of the anemone to dive bomb the chromis. I do feed heavily and try to give some flake multiple times a day.

Prior to this I kept 9 in my 120 for almost 2 years.

I have 3 of them for 2 yrs now started in 40 g breeder than RSR 350 they are nice and big now ....wont say model citizens but they been ok so far....

I have had 3 for 18 months in a 120g no issues. I do feed 2 times a day frozen food so they are well fed.

Who the heck decided that green chromis have peaceful temperaments? Every time I look away another chromis has been brutally killed by one of its own kind. My school of eleven is now a school of six. It’s only been a week or so. If you want a school of fish, go with anthias. Chromis are vicious killers.
I also have killers.... I have a 180G..... started with 9, two weeks after fight club started, I have 3 and they have been a tight knit family ever since.

I remember reading somewhere that one of the reasons why some people have success and others don't is because Chromis viridis and Chromis atripectoralis are sold as the same species and are commonly mixed together when they should all be the same species.

Is there any truth to that?

I started with 5 from live aquaria beginning of May and still have 5. One had half a tail for about a month. They do battle but not much maybe I got some decent peaceful ones. Dustin
I have 2 of the original 5, but I also have 5 damsels so there’s a lot of smaller fish to chase around.

It’s been about 5 months now and I’m holding steady at 15 chromis.

I feed a little 4 or 5 times a day. I swear those chromis act like hungry piranhas when they eat.

I have 4 into my 135g and they schoal together most of the time. I can see one chasing another sometimes but it doesn't look like it's a big deal. They actually share the tank with 2 tangs and 2 angels. Feeding is twice a day, tank is running since 4 months.

The only way to keep a school of chromis is in a biggg tank and honestly the just depends on the fish’ personality

A question for those that have kept a school for a year or more with little aggression, what temperature do you keep your tank?

Been in 7 years counting past tanks and always had at least 5 or 6. 78-80 degrees usually.

Yep. I started with 5 and now have three. The only fish in this new tank. I feed 3 times per day. There is one dominant that constantly bullies the others. I feel certain I’ll be down to just him soon. Hear if you get rid of the dominant another takes that role. They are nice looking but certainly don’t seem peaceful to their own.

Knock on wood... I've had 3 of them in my little 13 gallon for about 3 months without any issues.

I wish I would hv read your post earlier. I did the research. Great peaceful fish.. etc. etc. as long as you get 6 or more. Not true. Purchased 7. Two down 5 to go. Should I try to remove them.? Or hope for the best. Seems like such a waste. Do not buy chromis!!!

I have 4 in a 75g they been together for about 7-8 months 3 were larger and it seemed the smaller one was left out the pack but they are all about the same size now a lil snip here and there but nothing mayor they all get along fine

Edit: btw they were all the size of a dime when I bought them now they area bit bigger than a quarter

Feeding them often helps curb the aggression in most situations.

I started with 1, and I still have 1.

I fed them throughout the day. So much as too be worried about tank parameters. Way too many stories about rogue aggression. I believe it’s the fishes natural behavior. Maybe large school work as to share aggression among the many. That was the reason I bought 7. The littlest was picked off first night then a rather large the next night. I will keep feeding and observing. Thanks
