Hi R2R -

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had a green “algae” mat growing on my sand and some of my rock. It’s pretty thick and sticks together really well, making it lumpy when I try to remove it or break it up. It doesn’t seem to have any bubbles on it.

I would really appreciate any help in dealing with this and identifying it. I’ve run Vibrant for about 3 weeks and have not noticed any effect. Some of my LPS seem upset, mostly my torch which has been retracted for the duration of this outbreak. Zoas and SPS seem ok.

My parameters are:

Salinity - 1.025
Nitrate - 10
Phosphate - 0.08
Alk - 8.6
Cal - 463

It could be green cyano (spirulina). Like most cyano it likes light and no flow. I would try to increase the flow in those areas. Decrease the light, if you can without harming your corals. Keep vacuuming it out.
